What do you mean how have previous companions not been normal?

Fenris: I shouldn't even have to explain how he's crazy
Anders: Ditto
Merrill: Pretty much ditto, obsessed with demons blood magic etc
Wynne: Possessed by a freaking spirit
Morrigan: Very little human interaction previous to her meeting the warden
Shale: A golem with amnesia...
Justice: A spirit possessing a dead body

Charade: I can't think of anything, and she seemed fairly level headed.

You still have not defined what you see as "normal."

Spirits, demons, blood magic, golems...all that is standard fare for the Dragon Age universe. They're known and familiar things. The people of Thedas exist alongside things of a magical and fantastic nature.

So let's look at the companions that you named:

Fenris: An ex-slave whose past was traumatic. Quite easy to understand why he might be struggling with matters of anger and trust. Beyond that, he becomes a loyal companion, and someone who values honor and honesty.

Anders: An ex-Circle mage and former Grey Warden. Also underwent trauma. He is dedicated to his cause, but still finds delight in the simple things, and has an idealistic soul.

Merrill: Someone who has been cast out by her clan/family. Someone forced to go out on her own on her mission to restore the history of the Dalish. She too has an idealistic soul, and often sees the good in people, despite differences of opinion.

Wynne: Sure, she was possessed by a spirit, but she fights for a cause she believes in, is helpful to those she deems friends, is protective of those in her charge.

Morrigan: Sure, very little human interaction...does that make her "not normal?" She was sheltered, after a fashion. She is pragmatic, and not given over to emotions. She despises lies, and puts up many defenses to guard her heart. But she learns to value the people around her, and to respect them.

Shale: A golem with a sense of honor, and a great penchant for snark. She too learns to respect those around her and regard them as friends.

Justice: A spirit with a cause, who was yanked into the mortal world and is learning how to deal with his new environment.

Charade: All we really know about her is that she has a strong sense of family. Not a whole lot to go on since our interaction with her was rather limited.

I see a lot of wonderful qualities in the companions, and yes, they each have various burdens or struggles to contend with, but that, to me, is normal - that's part of the mortal condition. The circumstances in-game may be extreme, because it's a game, it's a method of story-telling...and the game world possesses rather extraordinary things. They all seem quite normal to me, and I would gladly adventure with any of them again.

Ok, my definition of normal in this context would be: someone with a personality which I wouldn't be surprised to find in a real person.

The whole point you even seek these people out to help you in your cause is because they are abnormal for one way or another (especially evident in mass effect 2)

Do you not think having a level headed companion is nice once in a while? Not too hot headed, not overly calm, just fairly collected and reasonable.

The people who I find come closest to this are Alistair and Aveline

She didn't make much impact on me.

To be fair, though, Merrill didn't make that much of an impact on me in DAO (I'll be honest, I didn't remember her when they first announced her) and she arguably had even less visibility than Charade given anyone not playing a Dalish won't even meet her...
In spite of that, she became a major character in DAII, so I wouldn't put it beyond the DA team to bring back a character as a companion even if he/she wasn't pivotal before...

Personally, I wouldn't mind if they brought her back, but certainly would not die of heartache if they don't...

Went to discover a mysterious lost gem all as part of a convoluted plot to make a point to her long lost father.  Doesn't seem very level headed to me.

The problem with that is that calm, normal, rational characters that are also human tend to be seen as "boring" or "uninteresting" by lots of players. See: Jacob, Kaidan, Ashley, Vega, somewhat Carver and Bethany.

She was searching for her lost father, and that was the way to find him.

I think I too would ghave searched for the gem.

Whereas I would not have blown up a religious building just to make a point

Or let myself be possessed

I just didn't find her very interesting. I mean she worked for what she was in DA2, a way to elaborate on Gamlen's history and personality. But I can't see myself enjoying her as a companion if the writers didn't add some majorly interesting aspects to her character. She was just rather bland in DA2... and her hairstyle and makeup didn't help either.

To be fair, Bioware does a good job at elaberating most companions in any of their game and making them somewhat interesting. So I'm sure they could do the same for Charade.

However I don't want her as a companion. I'd rather have the Hawke Sibling as the companion, and if Charade becomes a companion I feel like that reduces the changes of the Sibling haha.

The Sibling story felt really unfinished to me, and I feel like their involvement could be perfect for Dragon Age 3.

For the Carvers and Bethanys that went to the Circle/Templar route, they could find a way to become a Grey Warden. And then for Dragon Age 3, the Sibling could provide insight into the Wardens and what they're currently doing, and Bethany could provide support and sympathy for the mages and Carver likewise but for Templars.

Just my imput. >.>

I personally loved having someone like Kaidan to bring me back to Earth (figuratively)

I'd love to have Charade back. From what little we saw of her she made a really positive impression on me, and I'd love to see her again as either an NPC or a fully fledged companion.

Yep, plus I'd like to get in on a heist with her or whatever it is that she does. :D

But the sibling could be dead.

I was thinking about possible companions.

It's really not that hard to figure out how I came up with it, mate

Going on adventures is abnormal. A "normal" person would never abandon their homes or their families to go risking their lives for some greater purpose. A normal person wouldn't undertake the sort of hardship that entails following a grey warden into a blight, or an adventurer into the deep roads or a Qunari invasion. Heck, Bilbo Baggins was normal until he went on his adventure.

Even Alistair and Aveline are abnormal. Alistair is the bastard son of the king who never felt like he belonged until he was recruited into an ancient order of warriors who purposely taint their own blood with dark magic in order to fight ancient evil. Aveline is the daughter of a nobleman who decided to forgo it all from an early age to become a warrior and a soldier. Her idea of "fun" is to help Hawke kill things and go on adventures. These are not normal people by any stretch of the word.

I don't think the word "normal" is the word you should be using to describe an adventurer. I think "type of personality that I like" is more accurate. It certainly seems like what you want is the goldilocks solution. I'd actually say that Varric probably matches your criteria the best, since he is the most level-headed, stalwart, and loyal companion in either game, but, again, he is still far from normal.

Ok then, I'll redefine normal as: Not homicidal or possessed.

Given how much combat there is in Dragon Age, not even your protagonist could qualify for those criteria.

I like the way Brits say Charade, so why not. She's pretty much a blank slate and her quest was pretty tricksy, so she could be pretty fun to have in the party.

I wouldn't be opposed to that. I'd also like an elven girl named Ametheyne, native to the Denerim Alienage, to be a companion possibility. She should be old enough to get involved in such things by the start of DA:I.

What makes the killings Shepard, Hawke, or the Warden commit different from the killings the companions that you dislike commit?

Wow....I honestly don't even remember who that is. It's been forever since I've played DA2 lol.
