You still have not defined what you see as "normal."Flog the 63rd wrote...
What do you mean how have previous companions not been normal?
Fenris: I shouldn't even have to explain how he's crazy
Anders: Ditto
Merrill: Pretty much ditto, obsessed with demons blood magic etc
Wynne: Possessed by a freaking spirit
Morrigan: Very little human interaction previous to her meeting the warden
Shale: A golem with amnesia...
Justice: A spirit possessing a dead body
Charade: I can't think of anything, and she seemed fairly level headed.
Spirits, demons, blood magic, golems...all that is standard fare for the Dragon Age universe. They're known and familiar things. The people of Thedas exist alongside things of a magical and fantastic nature.
So let's look at the companions that you named:
Fenris: An ex-slave whose past was traumatic. Quite easy to understand why he might be struggling with matters of anger and trust. Beyond that, he becomes a loyal companion, and someone who values honor and honesty.
Anders: An ex-Circle mage and former Grey Warden. Also underwent trauma. He is dedicated to his cause, but still finds delight in the simple things, and has an idealistic soul.
Merrill: Someone who has been cast out by her clan/family. Someone forced to go out on her own on her mission to restore the history of the Dalish. She too has an idealistic soul, and often sees the good in people, despite differences of opinion.
Wynne: Sure, she was possessed by a spirit, but she fights for a cause she believes in, is helpful to those she deems friends, is protective of those in her charge.
Morrigan: Sure, very little human interaction...does that make her "not normal?" She was sheltered, after a fashion. She is pragmatic, and not given over to emotions. She despises lies, and puts up many defenses to guard her heart. But she learns to value the people around her, and to respect them.
Shale: A golem with a sense of honor, and a great penchant for snark. She too learns to respect those around her and regard them as friends.
Justice: A spirit with a cause, who was yanked into the mortal world and is learning how to deal with his new environment.
Charade: All we really know about her is that she has a strong sense of family. Not a whole lot to go on since our interaction with her was rather limited.
I see a lot of wonderful qualities in the companions, and yes, they each have various burdens or struggles to contend with, but that, to me, is normal - that's part of the mortal condition. The circumstances in-game may be extreme, because it's a game, it's a method of story-telling...and the game world possesses rather extraordinary things. They all seem quite normal to me, and I would gladly adventure with any of them again.
