 Came up to my room only to find all my fish dead. So naturally I tried talking with most of my crew, but noone says anything about it. I find it kinda off that someone would do that and that noone is saying anything about it. I sincerely hope my crew has better things to do than kill my fish! I assumed it was a quest at first but it doesent seem like it. One thing Im finding strange is... My fish has never been killed in previous plays but this time I invited Kelly to dinner and they did. She seems like the superloving type for all living things so I doubt its her unless she is some kinda psycho? If my renegade shep made the dinner from the fish in the fishtank then it makes no sense that he would leave them there or not mention it. Spoilers welcome, given up finding out who did it or why at this point.

Uhm... not always. I feed them from time to time but I thought that was a gimmick thing. Can they actually die of starvation? O.o

Yes they can die of starvation. Feed them after each mission unless Kelly is around and has agreed to feed them for you, and remember that you have to take over feeding them again once she's kidnapped by the Collectors.

I noticed the description on Khar'shan Snapping Eel says they will attack fish larger than themself when hungry.
Does this mean they eat other fish and survive if not feeded?

Though the Mass Effect Wiki says you need to feed them between every mission, i think it only applies to the main assignments.
I have at least done several N7/Firewalker assignments without feeding and it didnt kill them.

Interesting. In the case of missions between the kidnap and rescue of the crew mission means anything that makes a mission summary screen appear at the end. I'd expected it to be the same for the fish but if you've been doing a load of N7/Firewalker without seing little bodies floating around at the top of the tank then I guess not. Sounds like to BioWare Shepard's fish > Normandy's crew.

You have to get Kelly Chambers to feed your fish if you don't they all die. Just be nice to her and when ever she comes up to your room she'll offer to feed them when your gone. They also die no matter what you do so just don't buy any fish until Kelly finally meets you in your room.

I have gone through a renegade game where I was positively vile to Kelly (and let her get killed) and saw no dead fish. You just have to feed them all the time yourself. I thought after each and every mission/assignment/sidequest but per the post above that may not actually be necessary.
