I wouldn't say this has actually been a PROBLEM so much because usually the protagonist is a Noob anyway, but I'd find it really nice if the PC can actually remember things you've done in a useful way on occasion. Find a codex entry on the Rachni (with picture, no less)? When you see em, you shouldn't say "I dunno what those are!" Ask NPC to elaborate about Elven history? When you meet the Elven Radicals and they give you grief, you can harrumph at them and give them a short dissertation about You Are Wrong Because. Or even just when you need something from somebody and they're all "FIRST YOU MUST DO THIS QUEST" you can say "**** I ALREADY SAVED YOUR LIFE ONCE GIMME THE DAMN BOX THANK YOU".
And now I must go get food. But anyway, that's what I think.

Can't agree with this enough. The Mass Effect games were really bad about this and Commander Shepard's bad memory wasn't limited to investigate options. I remember in ME3 for instance no matter what you choose when you first talk with the ship's navigator Shepard forgets how the stealth system on the type of ship she's commanded for three years works.
Also I know it makes sense to have investigate options that explain stuff to people new to the series but sometimes they get paraphrased badly or come off as really awkward. There were a lot of instances in Dragon Age 2 where I thought I was asking a question about the quest at hand and suddenly found my Blood Magic-using Hawke not recognizing blood magic or heard someone explain who Knight Commander Meradeth was and how Templars work for the third time.

they make them idiots because of 1 thing, they need to take into consideration the ppl picking up say mass effect 3 having never previously played any installment of the franchise, so they need to have the option on the wheel for the pc to investigate what exactly she/he is witnessing and also have the companions explain it in a manner that writing may not.
One thing i have noticed about these options, is simply that there optional, you do not need to use them, there normally stuck on the what i term investigate side of the dialogue wheel and worded on it in a way that you know what your asking, but as i said these "idiotic" moments are there for a reason an i see no need for them to be took out the game
