I hope companion characters have on going story lines like in DAII

In DAO:
Alistair's storyline: we can decide who is the new ruler.
Leliana's storyline: We can let Marjorine go or kill her, alternatively, we can also influence Lelianna into accept who she is or reaffirm her faith in the maker.
In Dragon Age 2, a lot of the decisions you make are not very important, Anders will blow up the chantry regardless, Merrill will have the mirror piece regardless. The game shouldn't allow us to decide everything but should at least influence some outcomes regarding the companions' quests.

I wish we could have influenced Alistair to stay on if you chose to make Logain to go through the joining.
