As for the real answer....
Most of them (my friend list) are nice and treat me the same way they would treat a guy.
I can see that sometimes they try to be overly nice, but I'm not complaining. It rarely happens.

Very well.

On PS3, my experience has been perfectly fine. And I PUG quite a bit and almost always use my mic, so there's no hiding my gender. But everyone's been nice, nobody has made any big deal that I am female. Maybe two in my 300+ hours have ever said, "Oh, cool, you're a chick?" And after that, we just played normally... they just thought it was cool or said they wished heir girlfriend would game with them.

I really am just "one of the guys". As soon as I bust out a lewd joke or call a Banshee a b-word, everyone loosens up and the matches play out about the same as I imagine it does for a group of guys, joking and ragging each other.

And that's all I want, really. I'm not gaming online to be protected by white knights or to pick up a harem of guys... I just want to play the game with other players. So far, everyone I have ever met has done that without being weird, creepy, or abusive about it.

Little rule of thumb I've learned in online games, and it applies to Mass Effect:

If the person you are playing with is playing a Female, 97% chance that is not actually a girl.
Do not flirt online, it brings up awkward situations.

Generally like I'm another human being . I've only encountered a few experiences on XBL where a guy was a total idiot and either gushing because I'm a woman and playing better than him and added as friends and then had to delete them because they were pestering me. 

Hilariously I had the most immature moment re: I'm a woman in the game with three males moment on PC a few days ago. I was dropped into a game around Wave 2- it was Collectors/Reactor/Gold and proceeded to revive the team at least 15 times, use all of my rockets to complete objectives- but alas, I'm not quite good enough to carry an entire team on Gold on PC yet. I wiped on wave 8 saying calmly into the mic "you might want to use a missile at this point". The entire match a player was on the mic going "you're kinda hot...omg how are you surviving this..my friend thinks your hot..omfg..wow...you're a GIRL I cannot believe this..wow". <_< I responded "actually I'm a grown married woman". To which he replied "are you an independant black woman?" <_< Me :"not that it makes any difference whatsoever but no I happen to be white and?".  I'm a half white person and yeah I consider myself a halfie but WTF  I know he said this to be all cute and funny but I was not amused and he was just ANNOYING. 

The majority of gamers, male and female alike treat me like a person and seemingly view me by my gaming performance and my willingness to be a team player- because that is the way I treat them. I joke around and hang out with my gaming friends and have conversations in private parties but if anyone treats me with less than respect they will be blocked immediately or I will leave because life is too short to put up with that schit.

Honestly, the mass majority of men (and little boys) playing games are complete and total douchebags who the minority of us don't want anything to do with either.

As far as I've ever been concerned, if you're female and you game, that's awesome.  If you're a nice person we can be friends.  If you're as much of rotten person as the guys who hit on you, you deserve each other.

Usually it's not even slightly important. On the rare occasions I have my mic on, most randoms don't respond, and a few will talk game only - this is where I'm happiest.

But most who round are quite polarised. Then it's either 20 minutes of VERY awkward uncomfortable chat up attempts from squeaky boy voices, having things rocketed "for you". Uncomfortable.

The others who respond are the really nasty guys who go for you with violent sexual stuff from the start. Just yesterday I did a gold & had my mic on for wave 10 as the others were going down a lot. Straight away I'm getting "you skank b*tch*, "have you ever been f******up the rectum", I'm **** you up" "filthy **** b*tch", etc etc etc. Unfortunately I think I wandered into a party as once the match was over got sent really gross stuff from all three guys by text. Reported them all obviously but I had to leave the lobby. I wasn't deeply bothered but random out-of-the-blue abuse is unsettling.

I did wipe the floor with all of them in-game tho (next best guy had two thirds of my points)
- something to laugh about. Losers.
