Hi!
Yesterday Dragon Age II arrived. I want to play a mage and I'm wondering which magic schools are most fun to play. By now I'm planning to focus on primal (because of lightning and petrify which works on bosses) and spirit (walking bomb seems to be fun). Maybe also arcane for mind blast and crushing prison. Specialization will be force mage. What are your suggestions?
Btw: do I always need a healer in my party or is it sufficient to rely on potions?
Thanks!
Lloyd
Which Hawke mage build is most fun? [no spoilers please]

If you have the black emporium, you should just try them out and see which build suits you best.
If not, I suppose respeccing will be a bit of a hassle..
I personally find walking bombs the most amusing. It works great with force mages, since you can drag enemies together, get your rogue to disorient them all, then set off some fireworks.
The only downside is that it requires a moderate amount of pause-play (especially on consoles).
In addition to dragging enemies around, force mages can also destealth enemies, which is very satisfying. So force mage is a must for me.
The elemental tree (i.e. firestorm) is both good and bad at the same time. It's very powerful (probably the most powerful spells in the game), but can end up feeling a little over-used. However, in terms of pure wanton destruction, nothing comes close.
Haste (especially dual haste) can also feel amazing. It greatly increases the dps your party deals and makes your mage feel a little more like a machine gun rather than some slow sort of flag-waver.
You should be able to get by on potions alone if you're not playing on nightmare and have a decent setup. It'll probably be safer to have a mage with 'heal' for emergencies, but it's definitely not necessary to have a dedicated healer/spirit healer.

I get over 20 elf root potions on the longer parts of the game. I also tend to not take andars and when I take Merrill I make her a regular mage which is shocking I know.
mr_afk really knows what he's talking about ha ha.

trying a force/primal/spirit/creation just now seems pretty fun

I think Mage/ Reaver worrier would be most fun to play

Spirit Healer, personally I love healing, but understand that you cannot attack with this specialization, so raising another tree specialization is not my style, only standing to healer.

If you don't mind a more supportive role, Spirit Healer/Creation/Entropy/Arcane have some wonderful crowd control and healing. You can also add Force Mage for even more control over the battlefield.

Most fun I had was on my lightning/earth/ice dealing force mage. She only took primal spells, and Ice from the elementals, no fire. I gave her ice blue eyes, pale pale blonde hair (in Bethany style) and named her "Lily" always taking the pacifistic, diplomatic choices where available. I really got into her roleplay, she was one of only a couple Hawkes of whom I had a good handle on their personality.
I think I took spirit healer on her too, because I could have a second specialization but didn't use it much.
