The warden pretty much proved the marker was real. But anyone who was not with the warden would not know that so it should still be an option. Also Hawke found some pretty strong evidence that the black city is real in one of the dlc.
And note that believing in the maker does not automaticly make you a follower of the chantry. Maker could be real but totally different from what the chantry says it is.

Lots of people who don't follow any particular religion will invoke a deity's name as a curse. I imagine it's the same in Thedas. The Maker is a familiar name/entity/legend/whatever you want to call him - so he's easy prey for epithets.krul2k wrote...
yeah so does mine but it a tad hard to stomach when the VO constantly invokes the makers name

That same could go for your atheist (if allowed) and/or secular player character.

The same reason an atheist can still say "God damn it!" or "Jesus Christ!" (or any variation involving some deity). They may not follow a religion, but the phrases are more or less common profanity depending on the location.
I use God damn it all the time, and I'm about as atheist as the come. I like how it rolls of the tongue, and it's a common insult in the English language.

I don't see why the invocation bothers atheists. The phrase, "Oh my God!" is so common it has shorthand for texting now-- OMG-- and many who use it don't believe in God. Do you believe in God? If you don't, by that logic, you should never say, "Goddamn". Same thing in the DA universe. "Thank God", "Thank the Maker", etc. its just something alot people say unconsciously. It doesn't declare their beliefs about the existence of a god.on a side note its GODDAMN annoying lol

No, The Warden didn't. Oghren said a thick wall of lyrium was impacting the ashes and the temple; it isn't proof of the Maker. Corypheus' version of events also seems to contradict what the Chantry claims is the truth, so there's no proof from Dragon Age II that the Maker us real, either.
My Surana Warden espoused atheist views, and didn't believe in a religion that destroyed the second homeland of his people (as he told the priestess of the Chantry). It remains to be seen if the new protagonist will be written to be religiously Andrastian like Hawke was.

Hawke does say Leandra is with the Maker, and tells Feynriel (who he knows believes in the Creators) that he hopes the Maker watches over him; in addition to the religious conversation Hawke can have with Sebastian. Hawke is written as being religiously Andrastian. I'm not sure why, when we had a choice to determine whether The Warden believed in the Maker or not.
