edit: post not to you whyyyk

Hawke does say Leandra is with the Maker, and tells Feynriel (who he knows believes in the Creators) that he hopes the Maker watches over him; in addition to the religious conversation Hawke can have with Sebastian. Hawke is written as being religiously Andrastian. I'm not sure why, when we had a choice to determine whether The Warden believed in the Maker or not.

Right, despite the fact hawke can repeatedly express their dislike of the maker, call the chantry a scam to the grand clerics face and even become a old god worshipper in legacy.

Has it not occured to you that the only reason hawke says leandra is with the maker, could be because leandra believed in the maker as her deitie. Would you say a dwarf is with the maker or with their ancestors (depending on their belief), even if you are of another religion? Also I don't recall feynriel ever giving his religious preference.

In Act 1 during his associated quest he talks about it. And he was raised by a Dalish woman.

He actually can't. And even if he can, dislike still denotes belief in a sense. He would still believe in the Maker, but just find him to be King of the Pricks.

Well, he can't call it a scam IIRC. And insulting the Chantry talks more about hatred of an institution as opposed to a hatred of a certain belief.

A valid point.

This probably wouldn't have been so jarring to me if Hawke didn't do other "I'm an Andrastian!" stuff. I could've taken it as just being a "Godspeed" equivalent as opposed to it seeming to be that and a reference to Hawke's Andrastian upbringing.

If I could've made Hawke's beliefs depending on how I wanted to do it, I would've just seen that Feynriel moment as a Godspeed equivalent.

Don't blame me, I voted for Cthulhu.

The OP is not the first to ask this question. Instead of giving an honest answer, Bioware dances around the subject.

But I don't think we need Bioware for this one. Anyone who has played the Dragon Age games knows that you are never really given an opportunity to express your own beliefs with the exception of the Human Noble origin, and even that was a rare instance.

In DA:O, if you choose other thn "Wise" voice your Warden will not ever saying "Maker"...if you choose "Wise" voice your Warden will say "By the Maker!" in combat.

Non Human Warden will say their God name in "Wise" voice

You're missing my point. My Surana Warden said he didn't believe in the Maker. The Warden can tell Justice he doesn't believe in the Maker, while Hawke believes in the Maker. He even tells Merrill that Leandra is with the Maker. With the Warden, I have a choice to determine if he believes in the Maker or not, while Hawke is written to be religiously Andrastian, regardless of my opinion.

His mothers ethnicity is irrelevant to his personal religious beliefs. The warden could a pure blood dalish or dwarf and still become a avid believer of the maker. Also where in this quest does he state he believes in the creators?

Yes actually he can when speaking to the grand cleric about the warden and the blight. and yes "dislike" is sufficient enough to define your religious standing. You can choose not follow the organization without going to the extreme of denouncing the gods existence. That is a political atheist view which gaider has already shut down.

Incorrect hawke can call the chantry a scam during act 3 when conversing with the grand cleric. and again you're talking about an extremist view. Being able to seperate yourself from the organization is adequate enough without vocalizing how fake you think their god is. Some things are better left to the role playing.

Actually i misreading your post...i just woke up and get into this forum...lol

sorry for that

Anyway, yes it is annoying when our character saying Maker this that, Andraste this that...especially as a Mage

Actually, the whole premise about Maker and Andraste don't make any sense

- The Maker curse Mages who visit Him becoming darkspawn, too angry even want to use the cursed creation to destroy everything in the world
- The Maker steal someone wife
- The Maker hates Mages, He select a prophetess to destroy Mages of Tevinter Imperium, but everyday He create Mages
- Those who born Mages live in fear just because Maker create them in the world

And from the dialogue, we can sense that Maker is actually a creature...maybe demon..."Maker's breath!", "Maker's blood!'...i don't know what is your religious belief, my religious belief a God will not be the same like God's creations...breathing and having blood is not God

Funnily, Dwarves have some immunity, have special "right" to curse Andraste freely in their dialogues

"Andraste ******..."

"Andraste dimple buttcheek"

"Andraste ass.."

No one take offense, funny isn't it?

Maybe Andraste was an Elf...see how Elf greet everyone "Andrastanishan stanger/Keeper/Warden..."

Andrastanishan = ANDRASTE

I think that is the reason of Exalted March toward the Elves, because the Chantry want to bury the history

Andaran atish'an you mean.  While it's possible this could, over the years, have been wittled down to Andraste (language is funny like that) I don't think so.  I know IRL we've come up with some really stupid names for our kids but even we're not so bad as to name any of them Hello.  Right?  Right?

I prefer the much simpler explanation supported by the evidence that the Elves are, and always have been, jerks.

If someone like Velana had a reasonably sized force near a human border, it's entirely believable she would strike a blow against a human village.

Ah yes, Andaranatishan...my mistake lols

But still sound like Andraste

Jews greet people with "Shalomalaichem", Arabs greet people with "Assalamualaikum"...both have similar meaning and actually same words

maybe Andaranatishan means "may Andraste be with you"

No, because in Thedas doesn't exist anything to doubt his existance. You are a human, and as such raised according to Chantry believes, so there is no other option but to believe in maker.

David Gaider wrote...

There is no such thing as atheism in Thedas. Not sure why someone thinks it was an option in DAO-- possibly it's the same kind of interpretation as them thinking Hawke was "forced" into being a devout believer. Either way, it's not really an option we intend to include.

I don't mind the various references Hawke makes, since I talk like that myself, despite not being religious. They are figures of speech and are common epithets.

Despite David's words above, there are several and clear instances in DAO where you can either show non-conformity (by remaining silent in a couple of scenes), or outright disdain for the Maker by being insulting and rude. Perhaps the use of the word "atheism" is what is throwing him off. Perhaps if people asked to express similar opinions as those in DAO it might be more acceptable, as it seems it is only the players who have taken those dialog lines and assigned "atheism" to them, rather than the writers' intention that those lines be used to express atheism.

[edit to add]
What I think probably happened is that they included those lines in DAO for the RP value of the Dalish elf and dwarf characters. Unfortunately for the devs, the humans are able to see and use those lines as well. Perhaps if this wasn't their intention, they should have restricted those lines to Dalish and dwarven PCs, in a similar way that lines referencing the human noble origin (my family was murdered) aren't available to a mage, and so forth.

From the same thread...

David Gaider wrote...

harkness72 wrote...
I find this an absured response. Are you seriously suggesting that nobody in Thedas has ever questioned the existence of the Maker?

Among humanity, outside of the individual that would be correct. It's not a common thing. And, regardless, it's not an option we provided in DAO or will provide in the future.

David Gaider wrote...

Wulfram wrote...
Probably because they could say things like "I've told you before I don't believe in the Maker" in the HN origin

If that was in there, then so be it. There wasn't intended to be an option to express atheism. And there certainly won't be again.
