Would it have made more sense if they did the dark energy thing? I find that so much harder to defend, since why would they give everybody mass relay technology and encourage people to use it, then kill everyone to stop people from overusing it? Not to mention the creation of the Reapers makes far less sense - how is pulping the human race supposed to stop stars dying?

So "we are killing you so you dont kill yourself" makes more sense?

The only group we ever see in Mass Effect fairly indescriminately wiping out lots are the Reapers. The Leviathans themselves were being threatened, not all organic life. Synthetics attempting to wipe out all organic life is an idiotically far-fetched idea. If you really believe that the destruction of organic life is a real, plausible risk sufficiently severe to justify such extreme measures then you're seriously paranoid (and not very rational if you think that regular genocide will be a particularly effective method).

You're not understanding it, you're simply accepting all the claims made for the Reapers at face value without giving them any more thought than that.

Plenty of people do understand the Reapers and the Catalyst and thats why they are so annoyed with how ridiculous they are.

Except that nobody is going to kill everyone. The worse rebelling synthetics can do to ALL organic life is remove it from existence by convincing Shepard to choose synthesis.

well . not as ridiculous as the "we fight or we die" line or "steeeeevvveeeee!!!" ... but yeah .... its close.


it would have been fitting, if the reapers actually were the galaxies "exterminators", who were killing off civilisations so they dont enslave upstarters. the preservation would still make sense - because the civilisations are not evolved enough to see their mistake, so they are innocent like children. because of that, the reapers preserve them.

Exactly. Repeating what he told you does not mean you understand it, or that it makes any sense. He could've said that he's doing it because he was trying to make toast and his toaster exploded. I can understand that he's saying that but I can't actually understand it, because it makes no sense.

There's not necessarily something wrong with the Catalyst's logic; it is merely software after all. But that doesn't mean its ideas about what to do are thus acceptable for Shepard. Heck, the Catalyst may even be right in the end. We don't know, but Shepard is not a machine, she's a human - that simple fact will undoubtedly influence her stance on the issue. She was quite clear about this to the Illusive Man in Mass Effect 2 when she said: I'm going to stop the Reapers, but I won't sacrifice the soul of our species to do it.
