This month's challenge is "Spells and Spellcrafting":

New spells, new spell effects, spell crafting items and placeables, wizard/alchemist tiles, Spell-related creatures - familiars, homunculus, experiments and specimens…

This theme was suggested by imtherealthing.

Guidelines:
  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you.
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by February 1st, 2013 at 10 AM EST. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

Somethings you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:
  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot *from in game* for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie).
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. ** Placeables and monsters should include a portrait. **
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.
  • If you are doing tileset content, *please* let me know ahead of time so I can get you the set and itp files to work with. I’m horrible at merging those so this bit you will need to provide.
Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about this month’s Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here
***When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.***

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can:

Submit theme suggestions.
Vote for February's theme.

I promised that I would submit to this one.

Perhaps Anrheim's familiars and all the script frameworks that goes with that since Fester Pot asked for this last year. The problem however is that I used the work of other artists for the creatures. Some spells and feats go along with this package as well. Bind Familiar being an important spell. And the Mark Target feat is another as well as the Flight and Pass Door abilities. ... The more I think about this... this is no small task extracting my work on familiars and sharing. But I've got a month, right?. :)

If anyone is interested in making models for familiars... the list of familiars I have made so far includes references to the models I am currently using:
  • mouse (only one type which uses the tiny one available on the vault)
  • cat (tabby, black, and siamese) the siamese is by cervantes. I need his permission. The others are scaled versions of other's work.
  • crow (crow, raven, bluejay, parrots) - talking birds (ShadowM fixed Rebecca's birds. I'll be happy to share those models. Just ask and I'll make a project and upload them)
  • bat (brown, leaf nose, flying fox, vampire) bioware and hydromancer
  • I wanted to do a toad / frog group of familiars, but never arrived at a good model. A small version of BabaYaga's frog with a full animation set would be essential. The trick there is getting the animation set. Thats a community project that no one got around to.
  • Another familiar I have not done is the dog / wolf group of familiars. If I had help integrating OTR's dog doing its business animation ( ...or if I get around to cutting and pasting that animation into an open animation slot for the dog, the open animation slot that I have never found....) I may include the dog as a familiar which would also be the only one that could act as a meat shield. That said... the dogs and wolves in Project Q are VERY good. We don't really need more dogs unless someone can do for dogs what OTR did for deer.
Edit:
To be more specific, the list above includes all the models that will not be in this project. I am only going to use models that artists contribute to this CCC or are part of vanilla NWN. So the above is a list of potential projects this month if you want to collaborate with me.

Anyhow... I'll get a more specific list out with regards to what spells and the like I'll be releasing with Arnheim's Familiars. I widely integrated the whole thing, and its kinda useless without releasing spells like Teleport, and Clairaudience (actual eavesdropping) because I enabled these familiars to mark spell target locations for the wizard, and for the wizard to specifiy those alternate locations prior to casting specific spells.

Rolo got his start in something like that. The forge was essential and he couldn't afford (in that first life) both tower and forge. So the tower was pretty... sad. :-P

It worked... :-)

...then he destroyed the whole country :-(

Just to make it official, we'll also be making animated Familiar VFX of the small animal variety :-)

Shesu - Holy symbols have been done before as part of the April 2011 challenge. Now if you want to add the scripts to make these work for turning... (and remember that not all holy symbols can be used for this)

Actually; I'm interesting in a script, an unique power or something like that, that can be apply to a holy symbol to turn undead.
I can't add that by myself because i almost know nothing about scripts....

While not a spell, turn undead should be relative easy fo replicate in a tag-based item script, even for a beginner.

I would suggest downloading a script generator program (check here for links).  I started out with Lilac Soul's generator myself, and it worked great.  Never used the others, since they came out after I started writing my own scripts.

The generators should be able to take options you put in and output a working script that you can copy and paste into the toolset's script editor.

You'll want to have it do an area (sphere), checking for hostile undead (a racial type), then applying a turning effect.

If you can't get that to work for you, send me a PM and I'll whip something up based directly on the regular turn undead feat/ability script (nw_s2_turndead).

Well, I'll need that for the Mounted Familiars, won't I.
*Might* get done then, since I'm quite a selfish old man... <you said it, i didn't>

@Shemsu-Heru: I posted a script HERE for you to change the turn undead to look for a holy symbol. I can change that script in any way you need. Thanks for your contributions of content over the years

Thank you That's it the kind of thing what i have asked for. However as Rolo had suggested, could you consider to make a prefabricated item, with that script, in an ERF file. For those like me which don't have too much experience with scripts; Thanks again...

Since others are providing teasers, I'll do so as well. Part of my project on familiars includes an alternate to pen and paper D&D's Find Familiar spell. I call it "Bind Familiar". A wizard or sorcerer targets a creature with this spell. One use of this spell is to replace a dead familiar with a living one. Another use is to change the look of your familiar. The kind of familiar chosen by a wizard limits which kinds of animals they can bind.

For example, lets say that Mezlo the wizard has a crow familiar, but Mezlo doesn't like the crow's look and wants a parrot instead. If Mezlo finds a parrot and targets it with Bind Familiar, their familiar will now be a parrot instead of a crow. The beauty of this is that a builder can associate different familiar benefits with alternate forms.

Continuing our example, Mezlo has enjoyed his blue macaw as a familiar, but then encounters the rare jubjub bird which when summoned as a familiar gives the wizard a +1 to saves against enchantments (or whatever). So if the Bind Familiar spell is successful on the Jubjub bird, the wizard would - as long as the familiar remains living - summon the jubjub bird and gain those benefits.

Bind Familiar
Caster Level(s): Wizard / Sorcerer 1
Innate Level: 1
School: Necromancy
Component(s): Verbal, Somatic
Range: Touch
Area of Effect / Target: One Animal of the right type
Duration: Instant
Additional Counter Spells: None
Save: Special
Spell Resistance: No

This spell has the following uses:
(1) Restore Familiar.
When a familiar dies a wizard may cast this spell on another animal of like type and thus restore their ability to summon a familiar. Otherwise the wizard has to wait until they level up and gain a new familiar. This use costs 200xp per wizard/sorcerer level.
(2) Transfer Familiar's consciousness from one form to another.
Most familiar types can take different forms. Crows and parrots for example are different forms of the same familiar type. A wizard with a crow familiar can also have a parrot familiar, and most domesticable cats are equivalent with one another as well.

Oh! *Nice*!

Wonder what a Bird of Paradise would do for me... <forget it, wizard>
Wouldn't you like absurdly long feathers and brightly colored wings <i'm a storm elemental from the venn domain of shadow and air. what do you think?>
Hmmm... <*raven glare*>
Just a thought...

Edit: Teasers *good* =) Keep the energy up ;-)

Since no one bit on modelling new familiars, I've decided to simplify my project and use the standard appearances. So I will only plan on providing the following familiars:

The bat defaults to the bat appearance and has no alternates/upgrades.
The crow defaults to the raven appearance but can also be a parrot and maybe I'll include seagulls as well. Seagulls have two appearances which can be fun as they will toggle between flying and landed.
The mouse defaults as a rat appearance and can upgrade to a dire-rat.

Cats are out. I'll consider dogs if I have time.
Developers using this system can easily add new types. I'm documenting the system so it should be easy.

If anyone decides that they want to step up and model some familiars, I'll do my best to incorporate them.

<considers things...>

By modeling new familiars, what are you asking for? The creature models themselves?
I.e. What do you want that's different from the models you are using from the Vault?

Depending on the poll, I'll be doing Mounted Familiar VFX for:
  • Raven (in the works now)
  • Spirit (a generic default)
  • Owl
  • Cat
  • Bat
  • Toad
  • Snake
  • Mouse

House cats are the third mounted familiar VFX we'll do. Hate to see them dropped :-(

I mean the art assets - portraits, models etc... This is a CCC release so I don't want to include assets which are another's work unless they are participating in the project. For example if Cervantes contributes a version of that siamese cat I am using or another we will include cats, and if someone shrinks and animates BabaYaga's frog we can include toads.

All that said, I will still write scripts for your system.
