The game is great (not perfect) for everyone who understood beforehand what it was going to be about.
People complain about too many cutscenes - the game's selling point is its story.
People complain about difficulty - it's supposed to be a strategic challenge.
People complain about graphics - the game was never meant to be a FPS so let it go.
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say the story and characters are captivating and compelling, the sound, score and voice acting is top notch, the artistic design is dark and stylish, combat is fluid and challenging... it's just a great effort overall and very much appreciated. It's been awhile since I've wanted to take my time with a game, actually get into the lore, suspend disbelief and invest myself emotionally.
I think the people who will enjoy this game the most are the ones who say "I'm really going to take my time with this one."

I fully agree with everything you say but I feel the recent marketing of the game is what may be causing a backlash. I've been following the game since it was announced at E3 2003 (or was it 2004? I'm too lazy to check). I fully knew what to expect going into the game and I love it.
However, watching the recent marketing videos I was actually getting concerned because they made it look like a hack-n-slash game with practically no real story. The people that bought the game based on those videos are rightfully disappointed because the game is nothing like they were expecting.

THAT'S how fun this game is. (for reference, I love redheads like my character loves shield bash. And he loves him some shield bash.)

Yep. I agree 100% - in fact that had crossed my mind earlier. If you went just by the marketing you would never guess this was a story-driven, party-based, tactical RPG. And I'm going to assume EA knew that but still just blindly lunged for mass appeal. So shame on EA, as usual.wwfarch wrote...

Good point, wwfarch.

When I had to stop playing today to come to work, I was thinking about all the time I'll have this weekend to play. Then I remembered I have a date with a cute redhead tomorrow night. And I thought, "damn, I have that date. It's going to eat up some of my playtime."
THAT'S how fun this game is. (for reference, I love redheads like my character loves shield bash. And he loves him some shield bash.)

And all the party banter/dialogue has been great. Many of the decisions are very challeging on an ethical level. It's almost everything I expected it to be and am loving it. I just finished defeating the Sloth demon and it was beautiful. I wondered how they were going to implement battles with desire demons and the like and it's perfect.
Only gripe is that some of the texture models in the game are a little dated, but, that is such a minor thing right now. I already expected the graphics to be a little less impressive than Mass Effect and they are, but that is fine. Spell animations are hawt, though.

I agree. The game is fantastic! I have absolutely nothing to complain about, well... Maybe the radial menu that's popping up during an active pause on the 360, which I am playing the game on. But that's not a critical factor, for me. Great job Bioware! I must say it's one of the greatest RPGs I've ever played, and I've played plenty.

You are going to be slightly disappointed my friend. I'm sure in due time we will be getting the toolset for download but the PC purchase doesn't get you the toolset, you have to download it AND its not available yet. All the more reason to keep playing the campaign I say!

and TO, not because he loves DAO though, although he should...
just to clear up some prior statements about that list of 5 games i was using as examples to the reviewers, i do love FO3, and NWN2 as well as ME. in fact i even played WoW for three years when it launched, i have no ill will towards those games.
just wanted to clarify that those games were being referenced as "RPGs" in reviews when i think of CRPG i think of planescape, all the old gold box D&D games, dark sun on the PC, buck rogers on genesis, baldur's gate, icewind dale, etc... so to compare some of that list is almost insulting, but as pure games with RPG elements i love them or have loved them in the past.
cheers all.

I like it ,but lets face it, the pacing is screwed all to hell. ive been running around the magic dream land for about two hours now.
Yeah, that one kept me up really late the other night, trying to beat it. But finally beating it was epic. Felt good to have a challenge.
But, then I had to operate with sleep depravation at work the next day. Curse you, Bioware! My eyes burn, my productivity has greatly decreased, and my girlfriend is angry because of this damn game!
And to top it off, when I fell asleep today at work, I had nightmares of a certain shapeshifting dragon eating me!
