<opening a whole new...>

Looking into the Familiar VFX. Now I know a VFX can have Impact (animation of vfx hitting target), Duration (looping anim) and Cessation (vfx leaving target) that I plan to use for Bother landing/sitting/leaving on my shoulder.

According to Danmar (Omnibus), Fade runs after Conjure. Impact/Duration/Cessation after Fade.
Travel is the animation during the effects travel to target. When does Cast fire? Or Hit? How is it different from Impact?

 <clapping his hands...>

Apply 30 sec effect:
Raven flies in and lands...
does ambient little anims for 30 secs
Flies off.

(the idea being to make familiar cut-scene invis until needed, replacing with vfx on the shoulder).
I.e. Except for the horrid anims, it works. :-)

Wonder how long I can make the Duration loop...

<politely...>

But then you would not have the benefits of the familiar until you *did* summon it. Likewise, its portrait would not be available for, er, instruction on the right.

Rather summon it, and whenever "rest" is available, have it vfx. As soon as conflict occurs (Can we hook into familiar's onPerception?), VFX takes off and familiar un-ghosts.

Or even land/ take off/ flap for a while/ land on other (or random) shoulder, etc. With appropriate alternatives for hopping, scurrying phenos, of course.

true true... yes, I think AI hooking would be the way to go.
