I have windows 8 so I can't download the MS SQL Express 2005 thing. Windows tells me that it not compatible so I proceed to install anyway which doesn't help because I still get an error during the toolset installation telling me it that it is still incompatible.  Finally I get an Unable to Connect  error.

I have tried the 2008 ms sql as well and running the toolset in all the various windows compatability modes.

I have looked practically everywhere and the wiki site has not helped. Please help!

You may be able to get it working with MSSQL 2012, although I don't know for sure if it supports Windows 8. I got the Toolset working with MSSQL 2012 on Windows 7 quite easily, but I had to tell it to use the existing database after upgrading MSSQL 2005. You may need to create a database manually in MSSQL 2012 and then assign it to the Toolset - I believe there are some instructions on the DA Builder Wiki for doing this.

MSSQL 2012 seems to be a free trial or buy type of thing for windows 8.I tried using the wiki site. I tried to follow the directions but it was too complicated or I just plain didn't understand. :(

I'm also interested in getting this to work. Alternatively, has anyone tried running this in a virtual machine?

with default settings it works, even with compatibility warnings (win 8 x64 pro), just ignore them and continue setup ("run without help" option or similar).. you'll get to default demo module, it can save, it seems that everything works.. but attaching already used database is completely different beast, well with help of "configure toolset" utility (run in admin mode!) it is possible to attach already used database, but after starting toolset and entering my own modules, i find that they are read-only and i dont have option to check them in/out (all resources created by me - original resources are not read-only and they can be checked in/out), looking under properties for resource i can see that it was created and checked by me (my old username and computer name are there), but this is new machine and i would like to be able to continue to work on my modules.. currently i dont have idea what can i change in database to enable editing of my modules.. pfff..

Drummie, you have created the resources but regarding authentification you are not anymore the same user. Go to security - logins and you will probably recognize the relevant differences.

You mentioned your old user and computer name.
An option to get it to work again is to restore your user name for the database connection: OldComputername\\OldUser.
It should not be difficult to rename the computer name and user name.

The old server name is important as well: OldComputerName\\OldDatebaseName. The database name is by default BWDATOOLSET. (But I can not exclude that you have used a different database name.)

In case you have to rename the computer name for the server instance it can be necessary to run a stored procedure

Hey Yara, It's been a long time. After my computer crashed I just couldn't go through the whole process of restoring all the work I did again. Glad to see that Bioware is still providing the Dragon Age toolset and that the talented ppl such as yourself still are working on producing your art. I'm currently playing GW2. I can't wait for Dragon Age 3.

I finally got it to work on Windows 8.

All I had to do was to run the installer under Windows 7 compatibility mode. Strange that it didn't work under XP mode.

I've had issues installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on my computer, but I finally solved it. I think. Let me know if my method works for you guys!

Just for clarification, I have a Windows 8 x64 operating system, and currently it is the only Windows 8 OS I have available to me, so if you have another version of Windows 8 this might not work for you. Windows 8 x64 from what I've seen (which is months of research) has the least amount of compatability issues as apose to Windows 8 Pro or x86 (a.k.a x32). I have bought 3 PC games that are 2 - 5 years older then Windows 8 and they installed just fine on my computer. I've checked this and some friends of mine who own a x64 OS have less compatability issues.

Now, what I did are the fallowing steps. I hope this helps!

1 - Downloaded the Dragon Age Origins Toolset

2- Went through the installation process

3 - In the installation log it will mention "Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005" at the end of the toolset installation and a little windows will pop up saying you are having compatability issues.

4 - If you click "Run without Online Help" or something similar to this, a window will pop up showing the installation process of certain components in the SQL software.

5 - A window will pop up saying you have compatability issues again, click "Run Without Online Help" again or something similar sounding to this and watch the final installation process proceed. You might see SQLCMD or just regular Command Prompt appear but ignore it. The installation of SQL might take a bit.

6 - Proceed with the installation of the Dragon Age Origins Toolset and finish it up. Be sure to go to you're Dragon Age folder (Program Files (x86) / Dragon Age / tools) and open the "DragonAgeToolset" application to see if the process was truly sucessful and the toolset works. It'll take a bit for the toolset to pop up so be patient!

If it's been quiet a while and it hasn't popped up I recommend opening up Task Manager to see if it is running. If 3 minutes have passed and the toolset hasn't popped up yet I would recommend finding the toolset in the background processes and ending the task.

That's all I know! :wizard:

What processor type do you have, x86 or x64? Windows 8 Pro has been known to have a lot of compatability issues when gaming. But I was surprised to see you can download and install Dragon Age Origin onto a Windows 8 Pro OS. I recommend backing up you're character data (by going to Documents / Bioware / Dragon Age / Characters) and saving it to a external hardrive or flash card, or if possible if you have the Origin Client save the data to Origins cloud stoarge. Once you've done all of this I recommend downgrading to Windows 8 x64, or a older OS like Windows 7 or Vista.

Your welcome guys, happy gaming.

Let me know if this works for anyone else. And be sure to state your Windows 8 operating system type so we can see just how far Windows 8 can go with the Toolset. I'll do some research and see if I can find a way to make the Toolset will work with Windows 8 Pro.

It doesn't work for me, and I've done alot of research. By the way, I get this error at the end of the installation:

Error opening file for writing:

C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Common Files\\BioWare\\Uninstall Dragon Age Toolset.exe

Click abort to stop the installation,
Retry to try again, or
Ignore to skip this file.

Please help, I'm out of mind juice! ;_; I have been searching for 3 hours straight to find a solution!

Wow, worked like a charm. I got a new computer a few months ago with Windows 8 and wasn't able to get the toolset to work - didn't try really hard though, kept putting it off. In following your instructions, it worked right away (key was to run without help). A lot easier than what I had to go through putting it on my old computer (Vista). Thanks a lot for posting this.

What form of Windows 8 are you running? If it is Pro or Enterprise then it may not work no matter what you try. If are runnng regular Windows 8 then it should work on a x86 or x64 system. I'll continue to do research, see if there is something we can do with the application so that way this error doesn't come up again. (Note: You will never be able to get it working on Windows RT)

I'm suspecting you need to tamper with the scriptng the .exe file was built under.
