Is there a limit to the number of baseitems possible?

Yes, there is a limit. It's likely very high though. Generally speaking, if a 2da can go above 255 lines, it can usually go FAR higher - 32,000 or more. I can tell you for certain that baseitems goes above 255 - our most recent is 509. Likely, that means it has a very high limit, but the only way to be sure is to test, or to find someone else who has. Be aware that CEP has reserved a lot of those numbers, if you care about maintaining compatability.
