But what really boggles my mind is that the game, before EC at least, would give you a game over screen if you waited too long before you made up your decision at the Catalyst. Boss fights are too video gamey but a standard "Game Over!" screen is apparently fully acceptable. Idiotic. Image IPB

How so?

I don't see you establishing or holding to any actual standard here, just picking a game mechanic and pointing to it as a perceived hypocrisy. You could do the same with thermal clips, loading screens, power recharge times, or any other game mechanic. The quote (when not removed from context) isn't against video game mechanics, or traditions, or even boss fights in general. It's in the application of a mechanic, not the existence of it.

... What kind of video games did you play growing up? They must've been horrible.

Obviously the poor fool has never played any Metroid games.

Different elements work for different types of games better and I gotta say I'm glad you weren't designing boss fights for ME3 because your understanding about what works and where ****ing sucks.

****ing n00bs.

Amazing how you were able to come to a conclusion about other peoples' understanding of what works where from a very small sample of comments.

A boss fight can be a fight of words, intellect, willpower, etc.

Apparently the mainstream BSN opinion is:

"We here at BSN do not condone child violence. We do however, find it hilarious."

Not to go all original Mass Effect on this point but what about Saren? Saren and TIM play they exact same roles in their respective games.

After we overcome endgame Saren the first time via wordplay or gunplay we are faced with Husk Saren to overcome. After we overcome talking down TIM we meet the Catalyst and are handed "victory" without overcoming conflict and that's ultimately why I think a lot of people gripe about the "boss fight" issue.

Was talking down TIM technically a boss fight?

I think Stan accidently did it in his panic to get Flog's thread deleted haha.

I was going to PM him, but at least it's an anti thread.

(damn I feel like a hater now, BioWare, please let me love Mass Effect again!)

If you don't talk him down and don't use the interupts to shoot him you die, so I've heard. So a borderline yes as this conflict must be "won" to progress.

While not Liamv2 I'm someone who started playing computer games in the 80's with the Commodore 64. I have probably tried thousand games, wasted hours to hundreds and went through hundreds as well. I have beat some end bosses during these years.
I have played some console games as well and really, gotta say I don't see how bullet sponges like mid and end bosses from FF VII or FF VIII made ME3 any better. Different elements work for different types of games better and I gotta say I'm glad you weren't designing boss fights for ME3 because your understanding about what works and where ****ing sucks.
****ing n00bs.

I'm sorry, do my preferences offend you? I won't mention them again.

I see ending on Citadel more like some sort of playable epilogue than anything else. However game pace and especially Priority:Earth doesn't offer much to player before we end in Citadel. Players keep waiting and waiting for their kick ass moment, or similar reward, which never happens.

I wondered myself if boss fight would work but I really can't see it. Rather if BW fixed Priority:Earth then the flow might work, player wouldn't be ending in Citadel expecting that they get to kick ass there.

I wish someone would make an arcade gamey where you can do this.  And I thought I played a lot of ME and Gears,

Play 100 hours take a week off and it would feel brand new again.

Mass Effect 3 should have had an actual "Boss" fight, the "sub" and "mini" bosses should not even exist. Its bad enough the game itself was too easy as is, even on Insanity, I found almost no real challenge in it. A Boss fight with the Illusive Man would have done the game wonders. But they elected to go the "cinema" route where the good guy talks the bad guy into turning themselves in.

Games anymore are too easy, I'm not saying they need to be controller throwing, colorful vocabulary shouting, hair pulling hard but somewhat challenging would do games these days justice and give them back some replayability.

I thought what I was buying was a video game. No wonder I didn't like the game as a whole. It was way too dark and sad and not fun to play at all.

I'm rather indifferent on the whole Boss fight debate as well, my stance is merely as a player I wanted a final conflict resolution which I feel I was never given. We are given forced dogmatic discussion with the Catalyst, who like a gameshow host, says you know that grand prize you been working towards for three games, well here's the showcase pick your door.

At least with Fable 2's choose your victory ending I could get my Dog back.

Thats exactly what I mean. You went through the game expecting reward, resolution, to kick ass, whatever. It's very natural to excpect that to happen at some point, and because it doesn't happen before, you end expecting even in what is practically part of epilogue. Same thing happened to me.

Well, topic is if jumping, grabbing, shooting, whatever would feel more "closuring" if we put xxxx amount of bullets into some enemy before we jump or whatever.

As ridiculous it may sound, I suggested "Kick Star Brat into Elevator Shaft" DLC at some point. I would still pay for it.

Edit: Damn, there's nothing ridiculous in it!
