First off I'll get it out there that this may entirely be me pulling at straws and drawing my own conclusions from a tiny sentence fragment. I was reading the new interview from IGN with Bioware's Fernando Melo.  It's a good read for information on Awakenings and RtO.

http://pc.ign.com/ar.../1058656p1.html

This is what stuck out to me in the second to the last question:

Fernando Melo: The real win for Return to Ostagar will come from
some of the replayability. All of the party members will react
differently.... We
also kind of hinted at it in the trailer -- you do run into the actual
ogre that killed the king and potentially killed your mentor as well....

Granted I'm the type of person who believes Duncan isn't dead. I read comic books, so if I don't see the body of a main character I have trouble accepting it. :P But the wording in this did seem to support the idea that Duncan somehow survived. He has been captured by Darkspawn before [however that darkspawn was the Architect]. If Duncan was dead, why not just say so instead of the 'potentially' part.

That and the white out makes me think we may see him again in Awakenings, given his history with the Architect. I may be wrong but still, this is was interesting. Anyone else think that or notice this themselves?

That is an intersting theory :) and every sign does point to Duncan in fact being dead, but I'm sure if he was to be re-introduced, Bioware could definitely pull it off somehow.

well i would think that the Architect would want Duncan he did escape from him once.....but if you read the books you would hope the Utha came back and "saved" Duncan. my guess would be that we find duncan alive but turning into a darkspawn

I thought the same thing after reading the interview. I don't like "potentially".

Didn't Duncan kill that ogre?

I now respect that ogre for being able to survive the knife-climb of Duncan. That is some stamina.

They say potentially because the ogre mortally wounded him. An axe killed him.

Maybe we get to meet his (the ogre's)  corpse and kick it.

Well, if it is the same one, I will call it Waldo in the memory of the dragonstomped one in the sacred ashes trailer.

For the glory of ogres everywhere!

Edit: And take that people saying that Duncan is more badass than Riordan. Duncan couldn't even kill an Ogre.

When it comes to Duncan, we never see the death blow. We see him fighting the dark legions, we see the blade of an axe coming towards the camera at high speed, but we don't actually see Duncan die.

Until we see a corpse, Duncan's current status is "presumed dead, but possibly alive and hiding in a plothole somewhere."

But the Ogre was dead. It was a Hurlock Alpha that potentially killed Duncan.

I'm pretty sure the "potentially" part of that sentence was supposed to mean that it was the one who might have killed him. There were thousands of darkspawn at Ostagar, with no sign of the Architect or the Archdemon yet. In that cutscene, there are a bunch of darkspawn surrounding Duncan, so we don't know which caused the killing blow. While I'm all for a live Duncan, I HIGHLY doubt he's alive. Especially since he didn't contact Riordan and that Flemeth searched for surviving Grey Wardens. Oh yeah, and the fact that the Flemeth and Morrigan saw the Darkspawn eating all the bodies.

I don`t know what you think but that ogre that "potentially" killed duncan and that did kill cailan looked pretty possesed to my in the trailer. I think that a genlock emmisary has summoned the dead body somehow.

and duncan? still missing in action I say. no body no prove.

For Duncan not being in the game or contacting Riordian it would make sense, perhaps he was captured [by the Architect again but I admit that's a big stretch unless the Architect has grown in power], or pulled a Fergus and was injured the entire fight.

Flemeth not picking him up makes all the sense in the world considering her motives for saving you, sending Morrigan with you, and what we knew of Duncan's character. He wouldn't bother with none of that noise.

I do admit it's a lot more reasonable to think he's dead. I don't have my hopes up that he's alive, it's just the vagueness of his 'death' that raises my suspicions. That portion of the interview convinces me more that it may not just be me being insane, which would have explained a lot.

Curse that ogre. /sob

My two cents go to Duncan not being dead at all. I never got that vibe from the cutscene anyways, but then again half of that is wishful thinking.

In some upcoming DLC / expansion:

The PC warden walks into a tavern. S/he sees a hooded figure sitting in the corner table. The hooded figure seems to possess an awesome beard. There is only one person ever seen with such a beard.

PC: "Duncan! Is that you?! I thought you died at Ostagar! "
Duncan: "Bah, Ostagar was merely a setback."

I wish that Duncan was alive ó.ò The beard...must survive...

I think people are getting confused here, Duncan was not killed by the Ogre but punched away so it could get to Cailhan and once it crushed him, Duncan went bat**** insane and two-shotted.

Then he most likely got his head loped off by an alpha hurlock.

Well during the Vengeance trailer you see a ghost.
My guess is that Duncan will return in the Vengeance expansion pack as some sort of a "ghost" and help you in your battle against the Darkspawn.

Maybe some had Cailan as their mentor?

Edit: He grew a mustache and now lives in Denerim by the name Dave.

Maybe he managed to dodge and just lost some hair! :wizard: We'll see Duncan with a new haircut!
The beard prevails~
