You can't get any health bonuses early on except your Warden's amulet. Rock Armor helps a lot but Arcane Shield is not worth it. Dodge is better than defense, so get the Imperial Weavers from Bodahn. The glyphs, of course. It took me several playthroughs to appreciate how effective glyph of warding is. I only figured it out by noticing how hard enemy mages were to hit when they used it.
