I promoted a few characters the other day, for no real reason and I figured I'd choose a Gold match, even if my character (a Demolisher) was lvl 1. I put on the top gear I had lying around (III and IV), and my Black Window II along with a Hurricane VI.
So being fully geared up I joined into a pug gold lobby, only to have one of the guys freak out. I thought that maye it was bad form to take a lvl 1 charcter into a Gold lobby, but at the same time having good weapons and gear on should show that I'm serious about extracting, and have played before. Anyways I left, joined a Silver match and topped out in points by a good distance, leaving me to think that maybe I should've just looked for a different group or told the guy that I can pretty much guarentee that by the end of the game I won't be last in points.
What's the consenus of the BSN community, is it bad form to choose a lvl 1 character for Gold? Personnally I'd rather play with a pug using a lvl 1 character and maxed geared along with a UR weapon, than a lvl 20 character and no gear (which is all too typical, *the no gear part*)?
Is it bad form to pick a lvl 1 Character for a Gold match?

Ehh, not always. I used a level 1 Human Soldier with a Black Widow X, and Sabre X, and got second place(Close to First) on a Gold Cerberus/London. Now now, I know score doesn't really mean anything, but there were so many times when I had to risk MY life to go save all the guys using level 20's. So using a level 1 kit isn't preferred by anyone, but it isn't always bad, just go heavey duty on the weapons and equipment, don't be reckless, and you'll do fine!

Oh, I remember this one guy when I was using a lvl 1 FQE. He was like "This is Gold. A lvl1 FQE is not gonna survive". Hah, he ragequit after that match, I guess he couldn't handle the fact that his lvl 20 got so terribly outscored by a lvl 1.

Depends on the rest of the party for me. If there are already a couple people who I'm worried about, I wouldn't want to add a level 1 character to the mix. You should have just bumped around until you found a PUG that didn't mind.

....Yeah....it's kinda annoying to do that sir, we have to still "carry" you and you might go down a ton meaning it's like playing with 3 and 1/4 people silver I don't mind I can play that just fine with lvl 1s... but gold is a tad different story, the difficulty scale is not like 1 up but 1.5 times up try silver till around lvl 10-15 more "appreciable" for usefullness
I personally don't mind lvl 1s joining if they can handle their "mettle"

I personally don't like it. Goes down too fast, no matter the gear, and if I don't know the player he is a serious risk, if the rest can't carry it through alone.
So yeah, I avoid playing with LVL1s on gold, I personally wait till I'm around 12-15 to start out on gold.

I've done it, but people are generally unhappy with me. In retrospect it's a bit rude unless you know the people in the lobby and ask permission first. These days if I need to do that, I'll just host and start a match and have people join.

Probably, but I'd do it anyway. I don't promote anymore, so it really isn't an issue these days.

It's rude and disrespectful to use a lvl 1.
I don't care how good you are or may be. I'm kicking you. In PUG's

If you can't even be bothered with at least playing one or two silver or bronze before, then I probably won't give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume you do not know what you're doing.
With friends it's no problem.

On PC people profess that they love it, but on Xbox it causes the lobby to empty quite quickly. What weapons they have frequently doesn't mean anything, they could be former FBWGG farmers. Sometimes if I use a build I feel very confident I'll be able to dominate with I'll let a level 1 in if the rest are 20, but if they are level 8s and 15s that's just too sketchy for me, I'm not up for the risk.

Bronze +4-5 levels
Silver +5-7 levels
Gold +6-8 levels
Plat +8-10 levels
all from me doing a lvl 1 and seeing the results one day on a promotional deal...ugh but that's around the amounts you get on a go so..it's worth noting that silver is one of the best places to gain levels period anyways

The people that play 1lvl's on gold PUGs could unintentionally start a trend similar to "no equipment and consumables on gold PUGs, please carry me".

If I don't know you or have ever played with you then yes you get a kick, but if I know you can pull your weight then no problem. PUG's though I just figure anyone with a level 1 is nothing but a drag on the team.

Eh, I don't mind myself but I guess I can understand why others prefer to "not take any chances".
Everybody here knows a level 1 character can do just fine in gold or platinum in the hands of a good player, but pugs being pugs, I can't really begrudge someone too much for not feeling warm and fuzzy when they see a level 1. Although comments about how a level 1 is a burden to the team no matter who the player is, are ridiculous.
For me though, if I see a level 1 with max ultra rares (or high level ones), I just see it as someone who wants to level up fast, so whatevz. If I see a level 1 that's clearly a newbie, I see it as a challenge to carry them.

I rather pug with someone that uses a lvl 1 and have good experience and play gold as standard difficulty, than someone that has a lvl 20 TGI with Harrier 1 not capable of killing anything(Don't say it's impossible).
If you know the game, lvl 1 or lvl 20 doesn't make big diffrence, unless you are a power based class. If you have the manifest and experience enough, I would not kick you.
Personally, I look for loadout/challenge points mostly. If they have good gear, no reason to argue, just go.

I don't use consumables a ton on "gold" on plat always but gold I might not bring any NOT to be a drag.. or be "carried" but cause I know how to handle it from doing it so often

Same.
A level 1 character with level 4 consumables and a good loadout inspires way more confidence in me than a level 20 with no consumables equipped.
