When it was clear that the allied forces were aiming for the magic beam, why not shut the damn thing off? You know, just to be safe for a few days until you wipe the invaders out? And why the hell there isn't any defense turret or shields around it? If an army manages to kill the single destroyer guarding it, the whole beam is just waiting there for safe transport.
If we had a conversation option with Anderson, asking that why the hell this magic beam is still active considering the gigantic force of ground troops we managed to place all around it; a one minute dialogue would be more than enough to cover all these questions;
"STG has gathered everything they could find about it. According to our Salarian sources, they cannot shut this thing down without destroying their own harware, it is a delicate technology completely unknown to us; well, was unknown to us. They have to move the citadel, find and establish another transportation site, then deactivate this one while force starting the other simultaneously to be able to relocate the beam and not destroy it, otherwise they have to rebuild the entire thing. The science teams you gathered believe building this harvesting network of theirs is a great undertaking even for those ****s, don't think they would make such an unnecessary move for ants like us, it's a gamble at best; but sadly, it looks like our only chance son."
Anderson says this, and now we don't have to make a head-canon about the most important plan of Mass Effect series. It's still a very weak way to plan priority earth, and it feels so rushed it's not possible make a little sense out of it without using the "this is a wizard technology, it does stuff like this" card.
But hey, we have one extra dialogue option explaining the whole thing, athough still not good at all, the "annoying" part is now reduced considerably about the "look there is a beam, it goes to the citadel, go get it" scene.
If you have no time left and absolutely have to put something in the story that makes no sense at all, why not at least put a little extra work there to make it less annoying? A few cutscenes, dialogue options, two or three minutes of optional content.
