I mean from a story sense. I know Veridium is tier 4 and Silverite is tier 6 and the higher the tier, the better. But what are they in terms of the type of metal? I know what iron, steel and dragonbone is. I can guess that grey iron and red steel are just better quality versions of iron and steel. I have no clue what Silverite and Veridium are. Obviously some sort of metal. But I'd like to learn a little more.

Thanks

Silverite - a silver alloy, possibly

Veridium - there was a Veridium in an old DC comic, it was a robot made of a green alien metal. Guess it could be a reference

My understanding is that Silverite = Mithril (more or less)

It's an alloy comprised mainly of silver and steel. Much like Bronze is an alloy made from Copper and Tin or Brass is made from Copper and Zinc.

Honestly, I have no idea. I was kind of looking forward to it being explained somewhere, but I'm guessing Bioware just wanted to scale things on level in a unique way. I just wish everything made from Red Steel would actually be red. the Dryden armorsmith sells Red Steel armor that doesn't match the normal Red Steel armor you can find without the DLC. Terribly frustrating.

Made up terms to cover a tier of items. :-) You can pretend they're whatever you want.

Silverite is suppose to be the strongest and most expensive metal there is on Thedas. Veridium.. i just don't know. Well i hope they give up on tiered items. I think its really silly... :(

No idea for Veridium. However, I did read somewhere that Silverite is Steel hardened by alloying it with lyrium. Not sure of that, though.

You can make staves out of things besides wood.

Thanks for the replies. I know it is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but I do get a kick out of knowing such things and it helps with the immersion.

I'm wondering if more details are given in the DA:O books. I never read them but maybe someone who has can comment.

Silverite and veridium are fictional.

So are dragons. Don't tell anyone.

Indeed, the item description *I think* mentions 'carving' ....  It's the one Dog finds

And so is lyrium, the chantry, the Blight, the Grey Wardens, the land of Ferelden, the Fade, etc... but all of those are actually explained in detail.

-ites are usually the component compounds in metallurgy (ferrite, austenite, etc). So silverite would be a compound of silver and some other substance. I vaguely recall some breastplate referring to silverite as silver and lyrium but I can't be sure (or bothered to check).

-iums are metal elements. Verid- would probably be from the Latin root word verus, meaning true. So that means there really are swords of truthiness, and they are all Tier 4.

Ohhh  I think you're right on that - I forgot about the Lyrium.

So that's my new vote then - Silverite is Lyrium infused Silver.:wizard:

Basic fantasy/scifi game design element:

If it is desirable to have more categories of a metallic base, make something up. For instance, Adamantium, Electrium, Impervium, etc. Being a fantasy or science fiction environment, who is to say what is not possible? All that is necessary to install the element is to define where it stands in the metal hierarchy as to 1) how valuable it is, 2) it's hardness, 3) it's availability, and 4) any other special features. For fantasy in particular, how "magical" it is.

Veridum, Lyrium, Red Steel, etc were all just answers to "What can I plug in here to make this work?"

Must be plenty of dragons around in Thedas or maybe there's some dragon "farm" somewhere, considering all of the "dragonbone" stuff circling around..

Basically silverite = mithril as far as rarity/strength. It is super strong, light, and pretty. I BELIEVE that the poster above is correct that it is a steel alloy mixed with lyrium for strength.

Veridian and Red Steel I would presume are steel alloys mixed with Thedas metals that are strong.

Anything related to a metal that ends in -ite is an oxide or compound oxide, i.e. an ore, not an alloy. Just so ya know.

Veridium is reinforced steel? Silverite is specialty steel?
