Must be plenty of dragons around in Thedas or maybe there's some dragon "farm" somewhere, considering all of the "dragonbone" stuff circling around..

I'm assuming that any dragonbone stuff you find other than the stuff Wade makes you is actually old stuff that's been circulating for a while.  Nevarran dragon hunters were sporting dragonbone stuff all the time, and it seems reasonable that such weapons and armor changed hands enough times to be found in the places where you can get it.  Just because you find it in a chest, on a corpse or in a shop doesn't mean it's brand-new.

I remember (vaguely) elementary school chemistry where the definitions of 'stuff' ending with the suffix -ite and -ate were explained. I had to look it up (+2 oxygen atoms in the molecule and +3 oxygen atoms, respectively **), and I really don't know how it applies here but it looks like silverite would be a salt of an silver-based acid. Best I can guess then is you're looking at an ore - which is pretty much exactly what I wouldn't want weapons or armor to be made out of. How do you mold/forge an ore? It just sounds too brittle and too impure.

** So if we believe what we read, "silverite" would have the chemical symbol of AgO2. Smart people would tell that it won't happen that way though.

Anything related to a metal that ends in -ite is an oxide or compound oxide, i.e. an ore, not an alloy. Just so ya know.

Not quite right  - Your knowledge of ferrous metallurgy is lacking.

Ferrite (iron) and austenite refer to the crystalline structure of iron, where ferrite (iron)  has a body centered cubic metallic crystalline structure, while austenite has a face centered cubic metallic structure.

Ferrite (magnet) can also refer to brittle ferromagnetic ceramic oxide materials used in magnetic applications, but does not refer to iron alloys

I always thought that Veridium stems from the french word verde for green. The armor has a greenish tint.

My Theory: Since veridium is green in color, it's a copper/iron alloy possibly infused with carbon and lyrium to make it harder.

Red Steel simply has iron ore (probably dust) added in the cooling process to give it it's reddish tinge.

Silverite as a silver/iron alloy hardened with carbon and lyrium sounds good to me.

Grey Iron is also known as pig iron or cast iron.

Had a designer friend explain to me mechanisms such as this: "The properties of the item are this: that it can do what I say is, it's price falls where I say it does, it fills a niche between two other similar items of two different other materials, and -- most importantly -- any parameter may change as I deem necessary. Really, it's just a word that fills a niche as a placeholder."

Well, story-wise perhaps, but in reality if you raise your char to higher level (say 18 and up) early and start to play like that, you'll see plenty of "dragonbone" drop from people or come from places which are in no way related to Nevarran dragonhunters :)  And I'm pretty sure that there weren't so many dragons around, even at their best time, that there would be so many dragonbone stuff lying around that there's enough of it to go around for some random chests and pesky little street thugs.

Ah well, then again it may just be yet another metal alloy which is stronger then the rest and due to the materials used it gets some red hue and thus is called "dragonbone", despite the possible fact that the dragon bones probably are not red at all. Especially considering that if one actually would walk around in armor made from bones, that person would probably have most of the canines of Fereldan also follow him or her...

Veridian is a color.

I assume they named Veridium after it.

its annoying beacause some staves that are clearly made out of wood they say their made of metal.:?

Silverite and veridium are fictional.

So are dragons. Don't tell anyone.

Are you sure? Where did you read that? I'd like to check your sources if at all possible.

I'd be interested if anyone has come across a codex entry explaining exactly what all these materials are.

hm, i use "silverite" in jewellery and weaponcraft. of course if you think that "silverite" is steel and silver. what i use is special damask "alloy" (80%steel20%silver or 60%steel40%silver), this damask is really expensive - part of used material and part of used technology - no chance for home-made only few company sell this materials.

heh that remind me - my old instructor say - she is good as jeweller, bud weak for art cutler

So why does Dragonbone have to literally be made from bones of a dragon? For all we know, it could be Ferelden for platinum or some alloy.

Like Rose metal/Pinchbeck etc...

maybe if use dragon blood + crushed dragon bone = some sort of metal?

Dragonpaste is used to polish silverite to a fine sheen. Something about the crushed dragonbone having a more rigid and uniformly-shaped crystalline structure as compared to the usual 400 grit sandpaper those hack armorsmiths in Orlais use.

After spending several days not finding what I wanted I decided to work up the list myself. This of course is Not official by any means and could probly use some small tweaking. I hope this list helps others that are curious.

Iron - iron is actually softer than bronze, but iron is very rarely pure.

Grey Iron - A relatively weak grey metal comprised of iron & mercury.

Steel – is a hard metal made of a combination of molten iron & carbon.

Veridium - is a greenish-grey & yellow metal capable of channeling elemental energy. Veridium
is derived from Copper verdigris, the green coating that accumulates on exposed copper.

Red Steel – is a bright red metal comprised of iron and lyrium dust.

Silverite – has a shiny white and blue tint and is said to be as strong as steel but as light as copper. It is created by mixing silver, steel and a lyrium potion.

Dragonbone – is dark red and as the name implies, is made from the bones of a dragon

Starmetal - A metal with magical properties found in fallen meteors. Can be forged into weapons.

White Steel – is a whitish metal comprised of steel and white crystalline.

Volcanic Aurum – is a golden metal made from combining molten steel and a special volcanic gold dust.
