Depends on what you mean by "ideal". If you're talking about combat prowess, it really depends on your class. In ME1, my Shepard (Soldier) worked well with Wrex and Garrus.

In ME2, my Shepard (rerolled as a Sentinel) is complimented very well by Miranda and Samara. Miranda because she can prepare warp bombs (as well as having the only passive that affected the entire squad), and Samara because she was a biotic god(dess) with mass warp bombing.

In ME3, Javik and Liara are the best compliments, for the same reasons as Miranda and Samara.

I would personally say Garrus and Tali are, especially if you're a biotic class. They certainly have the best dialogue I've found.

Tali and Liara is also a pretty solid combo.

Well, they're the most used squadmates (at least according to the biggest surveys).

Garrus, yes. Liara's a strong biotic, but I prefer Javik or Kaidan.

They were constant Party members in ME3, but that was ultimately through lack of choice

Tell me, are you capable of counting? Garrus is a mandatory squadmate...for half of a single mission?

Garrus, Thane, Kasumi, James, Legion, Kaidan, Zaeed are the best squadmates I have had....Ashley with Black Widow as runner up.

Team dextro, since I can use them as my go to team in all three games.

Garrus is a great squademate in any of the mass effect games and is usually in my squad. Liara is good as well but not garrus good. If your a biotic shep though liara is a good squademate cause her Singualritys allow tons of biotic detonations in ME3. Garrus is the ideal squademate OP most will agree on that but the liara haters are coming here soon and they are just following the liara hate fad.

If I bring Liara and Ash with me in ME1, I literally have to try to die otherwise it will never happen.

Singularity ****s up everything. And Ash is a godly tank.

I like to rotate all of my squadmates in and out, so by the end of the game I've used them all more or less equally. I never a played through a Mass Effect game while always using the same two characters in my squad for every mission.

That being said, I do think Liara and Garrus were probably the most combat effective combo for my Shepard.

But whether or not those two are an ideal combo partly depends on what class you are playing as, and your own gameplay preferences. My canon Shep is a soldier, so Liara and Garrus complimented him nicely. Liara brought biotic ownage and crowd control, whereas Garrus brought some tech abilities and overload, along with some long range sniper ownage.

A Shepard with similar abilities as either Liara or Garrus, might find either one redundant and not needed. But that is also a matter of personal preference. Another player for example might role a biotic Shep, but favor a gameplay style that doubles down on biotics for faster combos.

James is annoying some times and isn't it ironic how Kasumi who is a thief is actually a really good squademate even though she really shouldn't be

I've always liked Garrus as a character. But in terms of combat, he got good in ME2 and continued that trend in ME3. However, in ME1 he's probably one of the weakest squadmates in terms of "staying alive".

He's always dead. I can always expect to use up my medigel if Garrus is with me on any of the higher difficulties in ME1.

Edit: and I use him a lot anyways because his decryption and electronics skills are very necessary.

I tend to go with Garrus + Tali nowadays. Garrus is pure gold with his lines, and Tali is love.

Yeah that was something that annoyed me in ME1 where you needed someone to have those skills to open crates and stuff. Also I will agree he isn't a great squademate in ME1 but he is okay. In ME2 and ME3 though he is the ultimate squademate.

I pretty much think all of the characters are well written. I may not like all of them. But that's just because I have my same preferences in people, as I do in game characters. I don't agree with Ash on everything, but I understand where she's coming from and I respect her beastly skills on the battlefield.(which is why I always let Kaiden bite the dust)

I feel as if Ashley is one of the more colorful characters in the series. And she's not even in my top 5 favorite squadmates

I love his "unfinished business" mission in ME1. Hunting down "Dr. Saleon". It's a simple, straight-forward mission. But I love the backstory behind it and Garrus reaction at the end. One of my favorite side missions in the series

I adore James personally...his such an insobordinate sh*thead and I say that in an endearing manner.....^_^....Shep needed some grounding.

As for Kasumi...I know right....lol.......in all fairness, no matter how much I love her, she did not belong on a 'Death Squad'....but she did kick serious *ss....:D

Mcfly that side mission was pretty good but I like how he got more laid back or at least less strict then he was in ME1. Also I know the side mission your talking about was in ME1
