Hi all, its been a longggg time since I‘ve posted/played. I’ve reloaded and I’m looking forward to playing again on the Hard setting. My warden will be a Blood Mage Nuker/CC just cuz I like them. I remember I used to use Alistair, wynne, and Morigan for the rest of the party.   I feel like I’ve always been left out by not having a rogue in my group. I just don’t know how to build/play them. Can anyone point me to a decent guide on them or give me some pointers here?

Also, I think I’d like to keep morigan in the group, just because I like her, but not wynne. Can I build Morigan as a decent healer even if it is out of character?

Thanks

I use lockbash mod so the only time i need leliana is in the city, so i just go and pick her up from camp when i do the steal quests in denerim.
Even without lockbash mod i could do without the occasional lv 1 shield & plant of some kind that is in the locked chests

With 3 mages you have enough CC that you don't need a tank. Alternatively, a dex rogue can suffice as a tank, especially if you invest in some strength for heavier armour (or just use a ton of strength boosting items to put it on, then swap back to your normal equipment).

Leliana is pretty much the go-to rogue. She is a decent fighter and can do all the rogue abilities right from the word go. Typically she's an archer though, so Dex and Cunning are her main attributes. You should probably lean heavier on Dex, at least to start with, since you'll want it as her hightest stat eventually, it enables her to equip the best bow, plus she gets Cunning boosts from her approval bonuses. But don't neglect Cunning completely.

Her best bow is Marjolaine's Recurve (or however it's spelt) that you get when you complete her personal quest.

Play her under the philosophy that archers shouldn't ever be in melee combat. She doesn't need heavy armour or abilities like Evasion - if she's getting hit (from melee), you're playing her wrong. Key abilities to go for are Scattershot (great CC) Critical Shot, Arrow of Slaying, Lethality and the utility ones (Deft Hands - maybe Stealth if you like). Song of Courage is great early on and should pretty much always be on, but feel free to switch to Song of Valour if you'll get more use out of it towards the end.

Don't be discouraged if Leliana doesn't seem to be getting the big numbers in the early game. She's a slow burner. But towards the end, with a sky-high Dex score and all the tasty abilities, she can easily be your deadliest companion.

Also, don't forget special arrows! They're rare enough that you shouldn't be using them all the time, but they come in very handy when you fight big bosses. Everything's vulnerable to something.

Melee rogues suffer from needing to be micromanaged. To get the most out of them, you want to focus on backstabbing enemies. Which means constantly repositioning yourself and outmanouvering the enemy. This can be fun, but such a character will demand your constant attention in battle. If you are good with that, then Zevran's a great character to have along (love him!) - just give him dual daggers, let him max the assassin and dual weapon trees, and always aim to stab 'em in the back! Unfortunately he's low on Cunning and rogue utility - and you get him relatively late, which means Leliana is objectively a better rogue.

Personality-wise, Morrigan's clashes with Leliana are even more hilarious than her ones with Alistair, so it's definitely worth bringing them both for the party-banter to watch the fur fly, especially if you plan on romancing one of them. However, with you as a nuker/CC, and Leliana as an archer, Morrigan really isn't bringing much new to the table. Too much DPS is never a bad thing, but too much CC is a waste, so lean on damage spells rather than CC ones to complement her healing spells.

Making her a healer is perfectly viable (every mage should have the basic Heal spell anyway) though you'll be waiting until level 14 to give her the Spirit Healer tree. But your party will be crying out for someone who can hold aggro and take a beating, which mean Alistair or Shale, ideally, though Sten and Oghren are usually decent tanks by about level 14 too.

That said, I don't think Healing spells are necessarily out of character for Morrigan. They're just the flip side of spells like Drain Life, Death Magic and Curse of Mortality - all just about the manipulation of the life force. A very handy survival skill to have up your sleeve, I would have thought.

^^^^^^^

Cool Advice, thanks. I've always wanted to make Zevran (sp) work but i could never tell if i was backstabbing right.

Does anyone know how many spell slots you get total, counting the books and the demon?

I too just decided to return to this beloved world. Looking back at my old saves, I saw I played alot of mages and rogues so I went with warrior this time around.

In reference to your rogue question, I play on the Xbox so my keybinding is severely limited. With that said, I've always made her Cun daggers Assassin/Bard build. I focus on nabbing all the major passives such as expose weakness, Song of courage and Dual weapon expert just to name a few. It allows me to to auto attack and maintain powerful sustained dps. With the assistance of Wynne's Haste and Morrigan's Telekinetic weapon, she liquifies everything. Other perks I give her are lethality, coup de grace, and combat stealth. Many might consider it boring, but it gets the job done all too well.

As for myself, my 2hander (which is my avatar now ) is accompanied by Wynne, Morrigan, and Leliana. Wynne (SH/BM) is a support healer with spells like Haste, heals, and Mana Clash. Morrigan (SS/BM) will be a dpser, control and back up healer. Her spells will gravitate towards single target elementals, Blood cc, Crushing Prison and Telekinetic Weapons. I know you asked for a dedicated healing Morrigan, but I often just give her Heal to throw out when Wynne is on cd. The only time I take control of her is when I want to use her Cone of Cold, otherwise, the tactics take care of it all. Morrigan is to much of an overwhelming force for me to make her a pure healer. Sorry I couldn't help out on that front. Leliana follows the same build I've used on my previous Cun dagger build mentioned earlier:ph34r:. Yes, I know she has archery talents, but trust me...just trust me. Stay the course and you'll see her become absolutely brilliant.

As mentioned before, My new (and now favorite) character capitalizes on my experience both with the game and Xbox. She is a auto attacker that focuses on taunting and sweeping while the two mages rotate their spells. Passives and abilities from the Templar and Reaver tree allows her to tank as if she is Andraste herself :o

The whole set up is simple and elegant with amazing killing speed. It is heavily reliant on tactics due to my limitations but once set up, you will often check the difficulty  to see if its on easy. I have forgotten how much I love this game. Glad to be back.

Edit: I play on Nightmare just incase you were wondering the validity of my strategies and builds ;)

No problem. I'm not sure what type of Morrigan you are working towards but here is a small bit of what mine looks like.

Self--------HP<50%---Deactivate Blood Magic
Self--------HP<50%---Drain Life
Self--------HP>75%---Activate Blood Magic
Enemy---Elite or Higher---Crushing Prison
Tank------HP>75%---Blood Sacrifice*
Enemy---Cluster---Blood Wound
Ally--------HP<50%---Heal
Wynne---Mana<50%---Rejuvenation
Tank------Attacked by Melee---Glyph of Warding
Enemy---Any---Winter's Grasp
Enemy---Any---Lightning

*Blood Sacrifice can be used on pets if you like, but with Wynne spamming heals on my tank this is usually not a problem.

Spells that I don't tactic are ones that I prefer to manually do:
Cone of Cold (This has killed me in Nightmare so now I do it myself)
Force Field (Too situational to leave as a fixed tactic. I like dictating its defensive or offensive use)
Glyph of Repulsion (Again, avoiding the Friendly Fire caused by Paralyzing Explosion combo)

In case you are wondering, I don't pick up any of the BIG elemental spells. A lot of the parts in the game does not allow you the luxury to drop them ea. Storm of the Century, unless you don't care about your squad wiping oooooooor you are stacking magic resist on your tank.
