Also, for those of you who complain about the uniformity/monotony of the OP, who would you like to add to it? I'm happy to take suggestions.

Find me some pictures of people who regularly run around all day in 50-pound armor swinging about a sword and shield.

NO U.

You do that since this brilliant idea is yours.

Modern military gear often weighs more than a typical suit of platemail, from what I understand.

Fair enough.

You're serious, aren't you.

You're comparing an athlete, who devotes all of their energy to a single field, to someone in the military? With military training?

I beg to differ.

Which Dragon Age protagonist was "in the military", "with military training"?

Several of them, actually. From what I understand, a lot of current-day military trianing drills were derived from common militia excercises of the past, including those that would undoubtably be used in any guard detail. So, Avelline, being an honest-to-Make SOLDIER would be one, as would Sten, Oghren and Alistair. Zevran and Leilana also, arguably, depending on their specific training on combat, being assassins and all.

I mean PC, as in Warden, Hawke and Inquisitor. Read the title of this thread before you post, thank you very much.

Actually, I dislike all insinuations of what a woman's, or even a man's, physique should look like.

But we can't have a PC without a 3D model in Dragon Age 3, can we.

Nice suggestion. I can't find a picture of her outside of loads of armor/costume though. If you can find one, I'd be happy to add it to the OP.

Anyone who has spent time in the military knows that the largest number of men and women aren't ripped and muscular like someone who spends most of their time in the gym body building: they pretty much look like every day people. It is actually very few who actually look like the suggested images.

Can you have people who are slightly overweight in the millitary?
Those are every day people where I'm from.

I'm not trying to insinuate anything. I'm just asking, because I'm literally that ignorant.

As I said in my original post, I don't disagree with the point that the OP is getting at.

What I'm saying is that she's going about it all wrong. Not everyone who physically exerts themselves on a regular basis show the same musculature. It's very dependent on what you're doing to build that musculature.

Building muscles by swimming or running all day is going to make you look a lot different than someone who will be in melee combat like the characters in Dragon Age. I'm all for using humans as models for muscle structure for our characters, but make sure it's the right muscle structure.

Also, the thread topic is "The Women of Sparta". I think it's safe to say most Spartan women didn't have swimmers or pole vaulters or tennis players builds either. That, honestly, pissed me off more than anything else here.

Lastly, OP, you're the one that asked for suggestions on diversification of pictures. I gave you a suggestion. That you responded so poorly to my logical suggestion says more about you than me.

You don't know much about Sparta at all, do you.

And by your "suggestion", if you mean

Then I'm afraid it's impossible for me to respond richly to your suggestion as I do not know of any person who does that in the 21st century. I apologize for my lack of knowledge and defer to your superior experience and wisdom.

So, who is it that you know "who regularly run around all day in 50-pound armor swinging about a sword and shield"? Can you find a picture of them? Pretty please?

You got to be kidding me. Serena Williams is pump up with male hormones to the brink, where i would believe that she has grown hairy balls.

Also, what does Sparta had to do with being Inquisitor? Our characters aren't soldiers - especially rogue class is not, and never was. This isn't going to be a mass effect with Shepard-like wanabe marine.

So, do you know of anyone alive "who regularly run around all day in 50-pound armor swinging about a sword and shield"?

Actually, yes. There is this wonderful chain of restaurants known as "Medieval Times" where they get out on a stage, in full medieval garb, including armor and such, and do duels and jousts in front of a large audience. (When I say "on stage", the restaurant is actually set up more like an old-school ampitheater with raised seating around a circular/oblong field.) They're kind of the perfect people to use for reference points.

There are several organizations out there nowadays that do such things. There was even at one point recently on... Discovery Channel, perhaps, a series that followed around a tour circuit of medieval-themed jousters who literally spent pretty much every day on horses in full armor, practicing with lances and shields and, often enough, swords. I would think their build would be appropraite for what you're trying to do here.

Oh, and spoiler, their builds are pretty average. :wizard:

Thank you so much. Your complaint that my suggestions look *to much* like soldiers constrasts nicely with the other posters' complaints that they don't look like soldiers enough.

Nice job, BSN.

You didn't look hard enough (or barely at all)
http://bit.ly/136JMGP

Notice how her arms are barely toned and she doesn't have visible abs.

Pictures! I need pictures!

Also I'm sure that they shower less than once a week, drink rain water, eat unsanitized food, and sleep in bundles of hay at night, right?

Pic doesn't show up on BSN.

And I guess the reason her abs are not visible is because she's relaxing in a dark colored shirt.

The same in the military, as long as body fat ratios are within military requiremetnts and they can pass physical tests, there are are many of those who are slightly overweight in appearance but still meet physical requirements. Only a very few actually look like athletes.

wouldnt a warrior from ancient times look if like anything more like a strongman in our terms an less like an athlete, i always thought they built themselfs for endurance/stamina an thus more fatty/strength combination

Um no her shirt is clearly raised above where abdominals would start to show if she was a toned as the women you have been showcasing or even Hawke (who was in the military and at Ostagar if not a mage, did everyone forget that?)

Have you been in the millitary?
I hope that's not a too personal question...

I was wondering, because I thought it would be interesting to hear the point of view of a woman who has served in the armed forces.

I know people who spend a ton of time in the gym bodybuilding, and they aren't "ripped and muscular", either.  Granted, they can pick me up over their head if they are so inclined.  Keep in mind that most people in the modern military aren't in active combat positions, though.  They're required to meet certain physical standards, but they aren't all that high.  And, last I heard, women still aren't allowed in the front-line combat positions.  There aren't female SEALs, still, and the only woman ever to attend the academy for the Green Berets did not graduate (although she later sued and was awarded a certificate anyway).

About the only universal with extremely athletic/active women I've seen is that they won't have huge boobs.

Simona Halep

before she got breast reduction anyway...  I'm amazed she got as far as she did with them because they do get in the way.
