Smash on a non-armoured target? Nope. All my nope. I tend to lead with Singularity or an Acolyte shot + Singularity. That's enough to kill anything, even phantoms.
I wasn't talking about phantoms specifically and in fact I don't see what the problem is with using smash on non armored targets. I'm using a Talon personally and if I'm far, I'll go for a singularity/lash combos instead but if I'm close and I have a groupe of enemies smash is usually my go to move (I have it on AOE rank 6 btw so that it can prime as much targets as possible).
Smash into lash combo leaves you exposed and thus is certainly not best suited against phantoms, but against many other mobs it's very effective to clean up groups, if necessary rolling out of smash and waiting behind whatever cover you can reach before lashing.
I'm not trying to have this kind situation happen on purpose because in general I play my adept at mid-long range and only go close for bosses. But there still are many cases where smash will easily prime small targets (small guys around a boss, enemies around the corner that you didn't see) in which cases I find it a waste not to combo into lash immediately if possible to make them go boom and damage whatever is around.
