Why should I feel bad because they allowed someone like me near their stuff?  Lanaya watched the chest near her, and stopped me.  She didn't even believe me when I told her that Zathrias gave me permission to take what I wanted.   :bandit::innocent:

Even the self-professed "Real Roleplayers" always have some internal 'gank justification system' when it comes to stealing phat lewts from destitute peasants.

You smash demons, trash werewolfs; and eat dragons for breakfast.

They are lucky that their house is still standing once you leave .... hell; they even get to keep their empty chests; how's that for charity? :)

This.

Also:

Warden: Ma'am, I'm going to have to confiscate these for help in the war effort.

Woman: But, that's my tea set. What use could- <POMMEL STRIKE>

Warden: Say "good night," Manuel.

There are consequenses for pickpocketing in Denerim. After pickpocketing the populace, I eventually got ambushed by city guards while traveling between Denerim zones. The encounter was not trivial.

Probably the same PC elitists who laugh at the misery of the console players that encounter serious bugs.

That is a very interesting game design. I didn't notice that since I didn't pick pocket innocent people.

Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 all shunned stealing from chests, etc. It is strange how no one seems to care in this game.

No I do not. In fact, my human noble robber will attempt to steal things while even being watched. I can't help the fact he has severe kleptomania.

What, aren't you guys even gunna put up a fight?

I mean I just entered your home without knocking, proceeded to open up your treasure chest(s), took my sweet time prioritizing inventory as there is not enough backpack, and then initiated conversation afterward not before (with no effect), all right in front of you.

Are not robbing people or statues?

Bioware is actually teaching us all a very valuable lesson and that's NEVER put your valuable out in the open. You gotta stash it away why? because its better to walk away alive than dead when 4 heavily arms individual go into your house and start looting your chest.

Would you try to confront them or smile and let them do as they please with your great great great x 10 grandfather chest? =]

I hate Fallout 2 looting system. You can't forcefully steal anything without actually genocide the whole town. Chest is for looting because the game actually make you grind through the area to find it. No point adding a stupid restriction system or you'll just end up killing everyone wmauaha

You think they'd use stronger locks for things they really wanted to keep out of hands. It's a sign that anything pickable and left open is yours for the taking :D

I try to RP so many of my characters do not loot in town or in homes. They are also poor as church mice and have to hoard elfroot for potions. I did just finish a playthrough with an elven mage who really resented humans and she did loot some- but not from the poor or from other elves.

I think I spent to long playing a paladin with a really good GM to be able to loot or even lie with a good character. Nothing like PnP to create bad habits.

My city elf started as a human-hater, and pick-pocketed everyone in Ostagar. As it became more apparent that I needed to save the world, I stopped pick-pocketing, as I feared it risked my ability to recruit allies.

I avoid picking from chests lot as well. Didn't feel right.
Except in ruins / dungeons. I'm sure the undead and such have no use for pretty trinkets / shiny baubles.

Oh yeah, I have no problems at all looting everything from ruins / dungeons. Areas like Ruined Temple, Deep Roads, Warden's Keep, even the Circle Tower are all fair game. I meant places like Redcliffe Castle 2nd floor, Redcliffe Village, Denerim, etc.. For example I felt kinda crappy picking locks at Eamon's place.

Not so much in this game where morality really doesn't play as much of a role (a good thing I think). In KOTOR as a Jedi, YES.

I wouldn't say I feel *bad* about stealing from their chests and dressers and whatnot. I was however incredibly wary of doing so, thanks to Morrowind - NPCs in that game will attack you if they notice you stealing their ****.

In all the BW games where I as a "good aligement class" could violate private homes and steal everything without any punishment, just made me kinda sick. I could steal from poor people their last savings, without having loss of reputation, without any partymembers objecting.
