To be honest, we kinda do have certain expectations.
We are largely assuming the game will take place primarilly in Orlais, for example. And that we'll be dealing with the mage-templar war I don't htink any of this has been officially confirmed, though it's pretty heavilly implied in certain sources.
From there we make certain inferred leaps. "If we're involved in the war, we get to take a side, if we get to take a side, our companions will get to take a side" and so on
Well, there has been mention of Orlais (including Mike Laidlaw's line about "some place French"), so people are discussing how Orlais might be like if the protagonist travels there (which seems to be a strong possibility, given what the developers have said so far). Some have also discussed the possibility of visiting Kal-Sharok, since a few fans have pointed out that Kal-Sharok is located underneath Orlais. Not to mention the Nexus Golem's line: "The Stone lives beneath Orlais".
The news about a possible civil war in Orlais has also given people some things to discuss, a few ideas to shoot around, and what may happen (such as the possibility of the protagonist being able to assist one side against the other in the possible civil war in Orlais), although I'm more interested in how the elves are doing in the occupied Dales (under Orlesian rule).
At least one of the pieces of information released mentioned mages and templars vying for control over different parts of Thedas (although this could turn out to be inaccurate), so some people assume the Mage-Templar War (or whatever it might be officially called) will play some role in the narrative (in addition to the conclusion of Dragon Age II addressing that mages and templars rebelled from the Chantry).
Given the different schisms, it's natural to think that, hypothetically, some companions would have certain views that go one way or another, and conflict with other companions or the protagonist (like Fenris and Anders having opposing views on mages, for instance).
