I came to ME late, fell in love with ME2 when it eventually came out on PS3 and have then spent most of 2012 entirely hooked on ME3 multiplayer. I have now finally managed to put down the MP, to dedicate some time and at long last get the full ME world story from the beginning. The gameplay differences in ME1 are quite startling, it's so clunky, especially having got so used to the speed of the multiplayer for so long, but I'm really enjoying getting to explore more of the Citadel than in the later games and meeting people who I know will reappear later.
More crucially I'm very confused about weapon and armor upgrades and other equipment and I've not found a reasonable explanation online detailing what I'm supposed to be doing with all this stuff I can buy or find. How does it work? Do I have to equip certain items? What do I sell, what do I buy?
I'm playing as a Vanguard and I've just completed the Dr Michel quest in the Citadel. As a Vanguard is there certain stuff I should upgrade or level first?
Help really appreciated, even if it's just a link to a handy online guide.
PS3 Gamer Finally Getting Confused By ME1 Equipment

It is pretty open ended as far as the items go. Basically it is an old school rpg type system where as you level up you find better weapons and equipment (the level of the items is tied to Shepard's level). You can equip what you want, but you should notice that newer items probably have better stats than the older ones.
You have omni tools which give bonuses to tech powers, and biotic amps which have bonuses to biotics. Look for cooldown bonuses.
For armor, you should prioritize Damage Protection.
The one thing to be mindful of is that the highest ammo damage bonus to organics and synthetics is from Shredder VII and Tungsten VII ammo respectively. So I would try to hold onto those two ammo types when you get them mid game.

You'll also get a lot of it, way more than you need, so be prepared to haul it to a merchant for creds you won't need by mid-game or later...or turn it to omnigel, which you also won't need.

ME1 suffered from offering too many pieces of equipment to manage. You'll spend more time than you'd like comparing what you've picked up to what you (and your crew) have equipped to make sure everyone has the best items. There will also be too many options to choose from on which upgrades to add to armor and weapons. Eventually you will wind up with the best weapons with frictionless materials mods, and you can just sell everything you pick up at that point for extra credits.
You do have an inventory limit, so you'll have to sell your excess items to raise cash and free up space. There is also a mission where having 300 omnigel would be pretty handy, so you can convert items to omnigel to build up your supply - just be aware that some of those items are worth major credits and convert the cheaper stuff.

When you become a spectre, You will be able to obtain spectre requisition gear. You should save up a lot of your credits right away by selling all the crappy weapons/armor/etc so that you can be able to buy those weapons from the C-Sec shop. Or if you save up 1 million credits you will be able to buy that gear from your supplier on the Normandy. For upgrades on weapons, it really depends on what weapon you perfer to use.
For armor, the Predator L, M, H gear is the best for sheilds and Tech/Bio Protection, but Collosus gear is best for Damage Protection. I usually go with the Predator L, M, H gear (note: don't confuse this with the regular Predator armor, though that is good in the beginning). For upgrades on armor, I would go with one medical interface/exoskeleton upgrade and another with hardening/physical threshold bonuses.
For Biotic Amp and Omni-Tools the best gear I have seen are the Savant ones. These will be available for you to purchase once you complete Nassana's assignment (she is the asari in red at the bar/caffeteria near the embassy). You can also get the Savant omni-tool on the Bring Down the Sky DLC. You have to find all three missing workers for that one guy and if you have enough charm/intimidate points, you will be able to get it.
