SOrry if this is a stupid question, but which one is "better"? For instance, if you have a choice between two armors, one with +2 magic and the other with +3 spellpower, which do you choose?

They're almost equivalent. I think magic might give you mental resistance as well or something.

+3 spellpower.
Each point you put into magic gives you 1 spellpower, some mental resistance and increases the effect of poultices. But generally you just pick the highest number here, as the spellpower component is the only one that really matters.
Edit: added mental resistance, thanks soteria

As I understand it
Spellpower = how hard a spell hits (amount of damage inflicted, amount of hit points restored, etc.)
Spellpower = Magic - 10 (the lowest value possible = 0)
So Spellpower is actually a derivative of Magic. HOWEVER, higher Magic also increases your mental resistance and is used to determine if your Mage is allowed to learn certain spells. (The latter part is actually kind of bogus, however, because when testing for new spells, the AI only looks at the Mage's raw ability w/o factoring in any accouterments. So I guess the mental resistance is the only additional benefit..

+1 Magic = +1 Spellpower in all cases. However, +1 Spellpower =/= +1 Magic. The reason is that (base) Spellpower is equal to Magic-10. Spellpower has a slight boost per point to every spell you cast, so it makes you a more potent mage. However, for elemental damage, you can get far better damage boosts out of elemental damage-boosting equipment.
Also, it seems both Magic and Willpower affect Mental Resistance.

Well according to the game. Magic increases spellpower by 1 per point (it's true that the base magic is subtracted, but that doesn't matter when choosing between the two). But it also increases the effect of poultices, and it increases mental resistance.
Spellpower, on the other hand, increases the damage of spells AND their chance to hit.
Because a mage will have plenty of magic (you really should spend most or all stat points there), you will have enough mental resistance, and poultices will be insanely good no matter what. So if you're looking at two items, just pick the one that provides the most spellpower overall, remembering that 1 magic adds 1 spellpower.
Edit: And yes it's true that +% elemental damage items provide by far the biggest boost to damage, much more than a spellpower item would (much like Vulnerability Hex is a much bigger damage boost than Spell Might). However, the choice here is between spellpower and magic.

Good resource on spellpower mechanics here: http://dragonage.wik...wiki/Spellpower
Don't forget, there is a cap on % elemental damage bonuses of 30% and vulnerability and affliction hexes are stronger with higher spellpower.
