Can anyone explain me how accuracy works?

The accuracy stats on guns make no sense to me:
For example the accuracy on assault rifles is "1" whereas the accuracy on the shotgun is like "40" or sth. And still the reticule of the AR is smaller than that of the shotgun.
Also if I have 2 different weapons of the same type, e.g. 2 pistols, with different accuracy ratings, the reticule doesn't seem to change if I switch them.
The reticule did shrink a very slight amount though, when I equipped an "improved sighting" on my gun.

Something else I noticed is skills do have an "accuracy cost" sometimes, but this also doesn't seem to affect my reticule.

So is this all buggy, does the reticule not adapt or do I just don't undertand the accuracy stat?

I think it shows the firing dispersion due to kickback, but I´m not sure. A shotgun is usually shown in games as having a big spread (no idea in RL), so the reticle is bigger to show that.

Yes I understand that. It's just I don't get the accuracy stat that's shown on weapon stats in the inventory system. It seems it doesn't make a difference whether I equip a pistol with 48 accuracy or 59 accuracy. Crosshairs don't change and I also don't really see a difference in accuracy of my actual shots/bullets.
And why my 57 accuracy shotgun has a bigger crosshair than my 39 accuracy pistol, when normally higher numbers mean better accuracy, is beyond me.

I only noted some difference when I upgraded to Spectre weapons. You can get them to fire continuosly without overheating nor reticle size. No idea about the shotgun, with the snipers it looks like it shows accuracy when you are not aiming, with Spectre ones and upgrades, you can get them to work almost like shotguns.

I'm pretty sure you can't compare a pistols accuracy rating to a shotgun in this game. Accuracy also accounts for the recoil your weapon gains with continuous fire. Take off anything that increases your accuracy or lowers recoil and fire the gun, you'll notice a difference.

Ok this is strating to make some sense then. I'll have to try this. I question what it's good for on sniper rifles though?

Reticle size does changed based on the accuracy of the weapon. However, there are a lot of things that affect accuracy, chief among them being Shepard's skill with the class and also whether you are standing, crouching, or moving. So just switching between two similar guns in the same class won't show you much of anything.

And as above, the stats are only comparable within one weapon class AFAIK.

Ok that's what I observed as well, but still if I have the choice of 2 weapons, one with 53 accuracy and one with 68 accuracy, the reticle does not change. How am I supposed to decide between the two of them? Most of the time guns that do a bit more damage have less accuracy and I tend to take them because I got the feeling the higher accuracy on that particular gun won't help me at all, since reticle doesn't change. Although I would rather take the more accurate gun over the one that does more damage normally.

Depends on what you want. If you´d like to fire more often, heat sinks (there are only I-III & VIII-X). However due to the usual long cooldown you can go all the way and use the mods that give damage while increasing heat (can´t remember the name now). Stop upgrading at level VII to max damage, and use explosive rounds (VIII-X) as amno mod. With only a second longer cooldown you get a hand cannon.
