Yup. Pokémon already has a winning formula there is no need for Game Freak to do a 360 and make it a wrpg.
I dunno, I can see some merits to the idea. Not for a main game Pokemon, but for maybe a side game that's similar to how the main games work in gameplay. So you're a trainer from one of the already revealed lands and you go out into the world.
Would've been really great for Pokemon Yellow, if you could have Brock and Misty as companions.
I can do without character creation. Hell, I can do without all of it, but there's still some merit to the idea of companions traveling along with you and player dialog.
As for a real story... well, I would thoroughly enjoy a Pokemon game that went in-depth about the nature of the world. I enjoy the battles for badges thing, but if they went beyond that.... well, it'd be great. Like, do the regular thing that Game Freak has always done but also link it more and more with the story.
Again, however, side game. Game Freak does have a winning formula, and if they want to try and switch things up a bit it'd be better reserved for a side game. I'd really love a Pokemon virtual reality game, if that would ever come to fruition should technology advance sufficiently.
Would it mean the end of life on earth? Sure. But we'd have a blast doing it.

Pokemon is kinda a dark world, though. Darker then you might think, anyway, though I wouldn't say it's "cloaked in shadows" dark. Crap Sacharrine would be the better name for it, if anything, though it doesn't seem like it's quite there yet.
You have criminal organizations that engage in corporate espionage and takeovers, blackmail, genetic engineering, war where Pokemon are used as living weapons, Pokemon that actively terrorize (and kill/can kill) people by what they do, hunting Pokemon to (near) extinction, and certain Pokemon even turn the land into a barren landscape where no plants can thrive.
Grimer's Pokemon Silver entry:
Wherever Grimer has passed, so many germs are left behind that no plants will ever grow again. When you consider that there are hundreds and hundreds of Grimers out in the world, then you've got a lot of barren wastelands... or at least trails of it.
I know it's primarily aimed towards kids -- which means these things aren't really explored -- but I'd absolutely love some form of Pokemon media -- anime, manga, game -- that went and explored these things on a grand scale. If an anime did it, it'd have to be a different one, but then that'd probably create some disparity between the universes.
Hell, Giovanni seems like the perfect candidate for Magnificent Bastard, which I thought the Unova series would've attempted in the anime.
Alas, they decided that he'd abandon his goals for Unova after a fit of temporary madness caused by the things he gathered for his plans in the first place.
As I understand it, one or two of the mangas are like this more or less then the rest of the media incarnations of Pokemon. Giving a whole darker take on the thing.
