Why is Garrus so popular?

Personally? Mordin Solus all the way. His backstory (IMO) is by far the most interesting. He's part of galactic history, a major player in the genophage which is one of the biggest story lines in the entire series. He justifies it with logic but obviously feels empathy. Then goes on to cure the genophage in ME3, sacrifices himself, to give the Krogans a chance.
I love his line "Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong", always seems full of sadness but also purpose and responsibility. He's extremely intelligent, he sings, and even has one of the funniest lines in the entire series.
Mordin: Thresher Maw getting closer!
Wrex: Tell me something i dont know.
Mordin: Metal in truck an excellent iron supplement for maw's diet!
Are there popular characters that you think are overrated? Or other characters that you think dont get enough appreciation? Sorry if this thread is redundant to this forum, but Im new here.

Because he's Shepard's best buddy FIRST, anything else came later.
Because he and Tali ....Never mind, shoot the damn bird.

but thats a cyclical argument! He only stood with you from start to finish, because he was considered the most popular character, and so Bioware kept him around. At least thats how I see it. Aka he was Already the favourite prior to ME3.
Oh, and I'd put Tali ahead of Garrus too. The Quarian backstory is also incredibly interesting.

If I remember correctly Garrus didn't reach the absolute fandom he has achieved until the advent of ME2...though I could be wrong, so don't quote me on that.....And remembering my days from the ME2 forums, his popularity was most prevelant among female gamers....I guess guys had the Blue Space Babes, girls had the Turians....there was quite a bit of discussion on that, men asking women about Turien appeal....Then Garrus got his further boost as a Space Batman kind of persona in ME2....and the rest you could say is history....

Perhaps it's also that he's less controversial than, say, Tali or Miranda. I don't know how many people really like him, but almost nobody hates him, as opposed to almost everyone else.
Anyway, yes, I think he was very much overrated in ME1, and to a lesser degree in ME2.

Thing about Garrus is that, some people dislike Liara and some people dislike Tali, but you never really hear anyone bad mouthing Garrus. That's why I think it seems like he's most popular.

The Quarian backstory is Battlestar Galactica...
No idea about Garrus, his arc in ME1 points towards him going NPC in ME2 instead of squadie, so he already got popular back in ME1. But while he & Tali are always part of the squad, they were not the only ones who always supported Shepard. Joker & Chakwas joined a terrorist group to help Shep, and both Wrex and Liara (if you play LotSB before SM) stood by Shepard but had crucial business to attend to. The VS is really the only significant character who told Shepard to GTFA.

There is no personal friction between Shepard and Garrus, as Garrus is properly contrite and quickly capitulates to Shepard's point of view even during Garrus's temporary development in ME1, and afterwards there's no crisis point at which Garrus wavers from canon-friend-supportive territory. Even admitting to murdering Mordin doesn't spark an accusation aimed at the player.

I agree, Garrus get a far better rep than some of the other characters because he doesn't really challenge or confront or argue with Shepard about anything he does (Ashley on the other hand..), Shepard can do some pretty nasty **** throughout the trilogy like murdering innocent people, wiping out species, or betraying friends and Garrus won't bat an eyelid (or whatever Turians have).
And this is coming from someone who likes Garrus a lot!
On a related note, is it just me, or do the female characters in the series tend to get more flak from the fans than the male ones? (except Jacob)
Not that I'm implying anything....
Well...I am.

I really start disliking Garrus after the idiot tried to become space batman on omega(and of course failed) in the first game despite influencing him in the first game to the accept laws and rules.
Also they developed him to much to a "bro" type in 2 and 3.

Personally, I didn't like the whole Shepard dies/is resurrected/forced to work for Cerberus storyline in general, but I thought the complete, almost religious, faith people had in him despite randomly showing up for the first time in two years working for a terrorist organization (especially if you're a sole survivor background *sigh*) was really hard to buy - at least Tali has some real reservations - Garrus basically says "I don't like Cerberus" but he then devolves into "follow Shepard" mode and never really expands on that.
I don't know, this makes it sound like I dislike him when I really enjoy having him around, I just think he's got a bit of artificial help on top of having likeable qualities.
He's a really fun character, and I love having him in my playthroughs, but I think his dossier in LotSB is very telling, where it says he will never reach his full potential working for Shepard (which is why I kind of liked the ability to push him towards considering greater personal responsibility in ME3).

Since you didn't read what my theory was and missed key points, and you own list of characters actually strongly corresponds to most the points in my listing, you may wish to try again.StayFrosty05 wrote...
@ Dean and Finn....if your suggesting Garrus is only popular with ALL because his apparently a 'brown noser'....your way off base...then all Garrus fans would also be ardent Liara fans....Personally my all time favorites are Garrus, Kasumi, Legion, James and ME3 Ashley....your theory is blown.

I know I don't mean my post to come across that way and I'm 99% sure they didn't either - it's not that you have to like the fact that Garrus is a bit of a Shepard fanboy to be a Garrus fan, it's that his lack of any substantive conflict or disagreement with Shepard makes it a lot easier to be a fan of him.
Then again, considering how poorly a lot of players people take characters not agreeing with Shepard (AMG THE VS DOESNT IMMEDIATELY JOIN ME WHEN I'M WORKING FOR TERRORISTS WE FOUGHT ALL OF ME1), I guess it's not Bioware's fault that they weren't particularly daring in that regard.

Sad or not, a great many people will blast the independent character who defies you, while enjoying the modestly submissive sycophant. Garrus isn't in that extreme, but he certainly attracts enjoyment and approval by being a cooler version of Conrad Version and he avoids attracting ire by being noproblembro.

He also was developing into an independent person who was going to go off and be his own adult. I never face-palmed so much as ME2's character regression: 'I got bored and lost any renewed commitment I might have developed, and then I failed, so now I want to go back to being your sidekick.'IsaacShep wrote...
Because he never questions you and he's a bro-friendly character who repeats "just like old times" and "drinks, bar, on me" all the time. Ohh and the entire transformation to space Batman in ME2. Audience always eats up this kind of archetypes. He was the most interesting in ME1 when had the least amont of overplayed tropes and was the least 'badassed'
It's a shame, really. End-ME1 Garrus would have made an excellent alternative/compliment to the Virmire Survivor during the Citadel Coup, escorting the Council to safety and staring down Shepard on the other side of the gun as Shepard tries to reveal the truth. And then, when the truth hits... tell me you can't see C-SEC!Garrus doing things by the rules and arresting Udina, whereas Spectre!Garrus shoots him outright without giving him a chance.

I in fact agree with your above post Belisarius....your right as far as I am concerned....As for Garrus, I would have liked some clashing between him and Shep, makes it more fun and infinitely more interesting....Let's put it this way, i didn't like ME1 Ash, had no time for her....but come ME3 Ash...she's awesome....
