I've played through the game four times now as different characters, almost entirely with my wife in the room (she's an unapologetic Alistair groupie), so during most of the playtime we had discussions about various characters. One such discussion always surfaced: how much we couldn't stand how abrasive and power-hungry Anora came off to both of us.

Sure, she puts on a good face, but we agree that it's mainly for her own ends. Did anyone else have to suppress the desire to wring her neck by the end of the game?

I wanted an option to execute her, I cannot stand her at all. Kudos to the writer and actor for making a character I so thoroughly loathe with every fibre of my being.

Last night my current PC got the chance to tell her, in so many words, that she was damn close to having me kill her. I took pleasure in having her apologize and beg for me to still trust her and work with her after that, even though *I* know she'll still stab me in the back if given a chance.

I happen to like her in spite of her neglect of the elves in the epilogue. Unlike Alistair as a mostly figurehead king, she gets **** done!

I am one of the rare ones that don't mind her. I see her way of acting as understandable.

The way Anora has always treated the elves bugs me. But I far prefer her eulogy for my character if I was romancing Zevran. Anora doesn't bother me, though. In her world, she needs to be strong and ruthless. Alistair adds the humanity to the couple. They're actually quite a good couple.

So what? She still betrays you. And tries to kill Alistair. Even if I can understand why she did it, I´d like to cut her head off for that.

Only if you were an idiot and betrayed her to Ser Cauthrien first.

People who hate Anora always cite her treatment of the elves, but as far as I can tell she seems mostly indifferent about them. I understand her character and her reasoning, and I don't mind that she is power hungry and manipulative. I like how her character is designed and meant to be, but I think she is much weaker than she should be and that it's very stupid that she let Loghain and Howe get the better of her. Loghain, okay, fine, but Howe? Really?

Anora: Remember, you must tell no one that you are trying to rescue me - my life is at stake!

Warden: Got it.

Cauthrien: Stop, what are you doing here?!

Warden: LOL trying to recue the queen, see here she is! *points*

Anora: *facepalm*

Well, she actually says, don't tell my people or Howe's people that she's here. She never says anything about her father's people, which is what Cauthrien is. If you believe that Loghain wouldn't harm his daughter and that Cauthrien is honorable, then you're not really doing anything wrong.

Edit: Also, Anora could easily say "I'm leaving in the company of these Wardens, don't try to stop me. That is my order as a queen."

I find all this incessant hatred of her completely annoying, and not always justified. I do not deny that her numerous inactions and actions have yielded negative effects, like allowing Loghain to get away with the civil war, but could any of us prevent a person we knew and loved from proceeding with what they saw fit? In comparison to other people in Dragon Age, like Loghain, Howe and Cauthrien, she's a lesser evil. David Gaider himself has warned as time and again that she is her father's daughter, and that ultimately means she will be loyal to Loghain. Mostly people seem to hater predicated on the fact that she's not essentially good, but neither are so many characters in Dragon Age, take Morrigan for instance, ergo such arguments are almost moot.
As my Human Noble character, I tolerated her for the fact that I had an opportunity to be king alongside her, and that she was more or less friends with my family, so given my noble background, she wasn't so bad. I also understand that her negative aspects can be avoided if you are able to take reasonable courses which balance lawfulness with good .

And if you try to make Alistair king without talking them into marriage.

Telling a guard that your "crimes" were in fact the rescue of the queen from imprisonment and probable execution is not really idiot-like. You try to convince a good warrior to see you are the good boys and Howe was a traitor who would have been executed anyways, had he survived.... That is what every intelligent person would do. After all, murdering Howe was NOT a crime, since treachery - and imprisoning the rightful queen without reason counts as that - is punishable by death in Ferelden. Not to mention Howe´s slaughter of the Couslands.

Besides, do I care for her reasons? She betrays me - she dies (or would, if the game would allow it). That easy.

Agree. That´s why Loghain, Howe and Cauthrien die every time - asap.

She is a cold blooded, ruthless ****, but I still put her on the throne anyway. Gives poor Alistair a break, and if she steps out of line, well...the Crows do owe me a few favors....

So, I really can't say I hate her. She serves an important purpose, and unless you're an elf, does a respectable job of running the country.

I don't hate her. Power hungry and manipulative are traits most rulers share, and they are understandable. She isn't power-hungry in the sense that she is a tyrant, she is power-hungry in the sense that she is willing to get things done.

Does her character annoy me, yes a bit, but does she make a good ruler, every bit yes.
So she is mean to the elves. That's no different than pretty much every ruler in Thedas, except for Alistair if he becomes King. But that is Alistair's character, the shiny knight of goodness.

My only gripe, is that she is so in love with her daddy, that she will never marry, therefore producing no heir, therefore leaving the land up for another civil-war upon her death (since Alistair, a Grey warden will not be alive, and knowing Alistair, will not have a child). Arl Eamon and Bann Teagan will most likely be dead by that point as well.

So the likely candidates for the throne on Anora's passing would be an offspring of the Couslands (if Fergus lived, i.e. your character was a noble), an offspring of Bann Teagan, or just some other random noble.

Because it seems that all of Arl Eamon's children are destined to be Mages, therefore giving up all their rights.

Unless you were a jew, communist, homosexual, liberal, or not a complete assclown, the same goes for Hitler.

And no, I´m not a fascist, I hate Hitler. Just a thought that came to my mind reading your post.

I like Anora. She's smart enough to know when to speak her mind and when to stay quiet, and she knows politics. Yeah, she's not the most truthworthy character, but she's also not a) crazy, B) afraid to work, c) stupid, or d) gullible. She wants the throne, but she also knows that she's capable of handling it. And she makes a good ally as long as you can go along with her wishes to some extent, since she knows how to compromise.

Basically she's more intelligent, more rational and more competent than almost every other person you encounter, so I can't hate her or even dislike her for any of her other faults.
