I usually find that most games end with me in either 1st or 2nd, but I really don't care too much what place I'm in. Ideally I like to be within a reasonable range of the other players. A spread like 110K to 90K for a Gold game. I've been in games where the last place is something on the order of 16K while the top was 150K or more, and you can't help but think that that last place person didn't belong.
Still someone has got to come in last. Sometimes it seems like poeple get bent out of shape coming in any spot that's not #1, which I don't understand. I'm happy to extract with a rocket/medigel leftover from pug games. Do you care what spot you're in, or if you totally outclass that bottom person?
Does it matter if you come in 4th?

I don't always get 4th place on the scoreboard...
But when I do, Joey_hexagon, StenTran and Feneckus are usually the other names above me.

If I come in last but it's a really close point spread (and I don't mean from 3rd to 4th - all 4 players are close), I'm ok with that. If I'm outscored by a large margin I get really disappointed in myself and may sneak out of the lobby in shame. It's usually about the time I stop drinking, too.

Because it's co-op, I'd normally say... no.
But it's also a good way to tell if you're getting carried by a longshot. Top three getting ~50k, while fourth guy has.... 9000? Something like that might be an indicator of being out of your league in a difficulty. But margins by much smaller amounts usually just means people kill things before you can get to them.
You have the right idea I think, although smart rocket usage usually has me tipping my hat in a player's direction regardless of their score.

I care more about if the game was fun rather than where I ranked on any sort of scoreboard, or if I won in a PvP game.
Though I'm told that I'm weird.

Depends on score and class played compared to others.

Depends on the situation:
1st: 108k
2nd: 93k
3rd: 84k
4th: 70k
It's cool. You were a great supportive player.
-
1st: 120k
2nd: 96k
3rd: 80k
4th: 30k
You caused the team grief and aren't ready for that difficulty.

I can honestly say that I can't remember the last time it happened, but I wouldn't be embarrassed at all if I were playing with friends. If you've got four good players all playing together, someone's gonna wind up with the fewest points regardless of the fact that he or she probably did pretty well.
The inverse is equally true though, which is why I find it amusing when certain BSNers crow about constantly topping PUGs.

I'm trying to find the SS I have of the glacier collector's scoreboard...
Public game, 3 Turian Ghost infiltrators with harriers, I was playing volus vanguard w/ claymore.
The TGI in 4th place got only 30k out of 11 waves.
If you come in 4th, 120k behind a volus vanguard with claymore, then yes, it matters that you came in 4th; but only because you really shouldn't be playing gold if 30k from TGI+harrier is all you can manage.
At least one of the TGIs should have outscored me, but not even the host could with a measly 65k.
The scoreboard is sometimes a good indication that you are in over your head...

Depends on the class too... I played in 2 back to back gold matches the other night and was a hair shy of 200K points in both and that was in large part due to the last place guy scoring 25K one game and 35K the next.
He was using a Volus and solely wanted to play support and keep the team alive. He clearly understood we all share the same XP in the end...

Just as long as the bottom guy has a few medals, it's fine. If he has none... You just carried him, and he should feel badly.

Sometimes you have a bad round, maybe a laggy connection. Other times your playing a volus specced for maximum shield boost, and the Krogan your following is killing all the things while you keep him alive. Or your the 4th in a PUG of three friends who play all the time, and they don't really need you.
I don't care about points as long I feel like I'm/you're contributing. Reviving, objectives, etc.

Depends. If I am in a team with great players and feel that my skill level is just a fly next to their skill elephant, it is an okayface. I must practice more.
If I am in a team with Harrier users, screw you guys.

Mostly not.
The scoring system is bugged or at least doesn't work properly. Check it out when all four score approximately the same amount of points, the order on the screen often does not match the scores.
Also, how many times have you whittled down a big critter, had someone else come in for a few last second hits and you got very few points out of it? Or conversely, waltz in at the last second, fire a quick burst and score the majority of the points for the kill?
Generally, the score reflects what mostly went on in the game as far as damage done, medals earned, etcetera, but it has inherent inaccuracies and limitations. So if you are sweating the leader board, you're sweatin' the wrong thing.

If the game was unpleasant up to the end I'd probably be bitter :/ if I had fun the whole time and ended up in fourth I would go aww and then not really care.

depends a lot of times someone will be in forth because they were playing as an area detonator for a paladin or a Vsol,Vsent, GT. In which case the detonator barely gets any points while the primer will score tons of points

Not about points. Check the medals. Do you at least have either a decent kill medal or 50 assists, maybe a revive medal? If you revive people 15 times and debuff enemies, I could give a **** less what your score is so long as the enemies die.
I only feel bad when it's ME that's 4th.
