I guess what he meant that Taunt is situational is that it is not actually a must for you to Taunt dive as it is suicide. Even a seasoned player knows that. CC is not just limited to CoC or MB or insert other talents that buy time. Even if you have maxed out Dexterity, you still have a chance to be hit and the more enemies you tank, the more chances you get hit and if 50% or so of them landed a hit on your tank, then you'll still find yourself in trouble. Moderation is the key. To me, Dexterity is just an assurance that my tank can actually avoid incoming physical damage. I don't actually aim to dodge every attack.
;)

Taunt "dive" is not suicide. What's suicide is not taunting and having mobs attack your best armored character. I don't like Wynne getting hit... at all.

My earlier point was that you're much better off NOT putting points into constitution because you can max both resistances and get really high HP through gear. What you cannot do is get extremely high avoidance through the tank gear. Your goal SHOULD be to have Alistair avoid as much damage as possible. When I fight the Arch Demon, sometimes I don't even have to toss him a single heal (no pots, no heals from Wynne, nothing). Just buff him and send him in. The entire fight he takes next to no damage, making bumping his HP through constitution utterly pointless.

In this game it's better to have a decent health pool and take almost no damage, rather than have a huge HP pool and take a lot.

Early on how much should I put into str/dex to make him most effective?

Also should I go for sheild wall or bravery first?

You'll generally see two schools of thought on this.

a) Get his Dex to 26 ASAP for shield tactics and mastery. After that dump every point into Strength until he reaches 39 for Knight Commanders Plate http://dragonage.wik...mmander's_Plate OR 42 STR for Wade's superior dragonbone. Once you reach 39 or 42 STR you dump all points into DEX from there.

B) Get him to 20 Dex for shield tactics only (forgoing shield mastery), shoot for 39/42 STR after that. Once you reach that back to dumping all points into dex and picking up shield mastery later.

I generally go for option B. His damage intake drops a lot once you get Shield Tactics.

I found I could get Alistair to high strength before meeting the level requirement for the 4th tier shield talents.

Interesting point. If you continue raising dex, there comes a point where he does more damage with a dagger like "the edge" than a sword.

Been playing through following the tips in this thread and it has helped a lot compared to my first play through.

Getting taunt early was a huge help. Played through my last character without it and now i feel like an idiot.

I honestly don't see why anyone bothers with Con. It would only be worth it if healing was a percentage instead of a number.

Basically, lets say a dex tank has 100 health, and gets hit 50% of the time, by an attack that does 10 damage, and takes 1 second. He will last 20 seconds on average.

And then we have a con tank, with 200 health, and gets hit 100% of the time with said attack. He also lasts 20 seconds.

Lets say the enemy attacks for 15 seconds. The dex tank has 25 health left. The con tank has 50 health left. They each drink a potion that gives 75 health points. The dex tank has 100 health. The con tank has 125 health. They are attacked for 10 seconds more. The dex tank has 50 health. The con tank has 25 health. And this gap grows and grows the longer the fight.

This is not Pokemon. You don't heal 50% of your max health with a spell, like Blissey does with Softboiled. There are no strong single-hit attacks in the game, except for perhaps grab/overwhelm (which can be interrupted, or you can be forcefielded/healed by your mage). You don't need x hp evs so you can't be 2hko'd by a Gyarados' Waterfall after 1 DD. It doesn't work like that. Dex tanks have all the health you'll ever need. Especially if you wear Blood Dragon armor and/or Lifegiver Ring.

DEX > CON. Period.

Also, Dex tanks scale much much better at higher levels. At first, the difference between being hit 100% of the time and 99% of the time is 1% total damage. But later on, the difference between being hit 20% of the time and being hit 19% of the time is 5% total damage. Con doesn't scale nearly as well as this. Also, for this reason, you should run Shield Wall at low levels, but when you start to dodge a lot of attacks, go with Shield Defense on your dex tank (except for obvious troll/wolf/dragon/drake encounters where you need knock-down immunity).
