I can't really add much to this topic. Maybe 'Amon Jero' in NWN 2 and 'Handsome Jack'.
My previous post minus Loghain and ME3's TIM.

Farscape's Scorpius should be on any magnificent bastards list.

After finishing Steven Erikson's "The Malazan Book of The Fallen" series, i believe that former Emperor Kellanved could also qualify under KoP's definition of a Magnificent Bastard.

Who KoP will pick as number 1 is clear imo.

I am not ranking them, so there is no number 1.

But out of curiosity, who do you think I'd have picked?

Your profile pic.

And it´s also hard to see a villain who almost always got something out of his plans no matter the outcome.

Xanatos being on the list is a given. If the list was numbered and he wasn't number 1, i would be surprised.

How does that make him magnificent?
Kratos isn't smart, tactical or charismatic.
He's more of a "Hulk smash!" variety.
What's there to admire about him?

Well, while he isn't a Magnificent Bastard, I'd certainly consider him a bastard that's magnificent.

I'd argue that Kratos is smart, as he's solved puzzles other people couldn't.

Tactical? I'd argue that he doesn't really need to be in the main games, but in his backstory he most certainly was -- in the military sense of the word, that is.

And to be fair, most of what he's "Hulk smashing" happen to be undead, Cyclops, wraiths, sirens, gorgons, etc. Essentially.... things that do need to be pummeled to death.

I as well am a fan of the manipulative magnificent bastard character type. The more complex they are, and who goes about in such a breathtaking fashion and panache that doesn't simply evoke a level of amazement, but also a grudging admiration is an aspect I truly love. Of course, the more sympathetic and emotionally connected they manage to make me plays a huge part as well, even though I won't always agree with their specific method(s) / motive(s).

I haven't really bothered before to compile a list of characters (which I probably should do in the future), so I'm going to simply list a few characters that comes to mind from different sort of fiction in no specific order:

10. David Xanatos
9. Kreia
8. Letho of Gulet
7. Jaques the Aldersberg
6. Grand Admiral Thrawn
5. Radovid the Stern
4. Michael Thorton
3. Albus Dumbledore
2. Tywin Lannister
1. The Nameless One

As I said, these characters are ones from the top of my head, and there are others who'd make it to the list.

Here's the newest entry. The Lich King from WarCraft.
And no, I do not take WoW and other related material into consideration.

I agree with what you mentioned in the article as well - Arthas and Ner'Zhul certainly have similar traits, both the good and the bad. Remembering the Ner'Zhul background info makes me miss Warcraft III's instruction manual - the amount of lore they covered in that one section was surprisingly in-depth.

My #1 vote for Magnificent Bastard is going to stay with Tyrion, for now. Keep up the good work, Knight :)

After reading your blog, I have come to the conclusion that either you've spent too much time playing video games or I haven't spent enough.

Or that most antagonists in video games are ****** poor. Other than Kane, the best Magnificent Bastard I can think of was my Dalish Elf Grey Warden...

Actually there are a lot of games I hear a lot of good things about that I haven't tried yet.

There are some good games out there and great characters :)

Most of games I've played are strategy games so I any advice or recommendations on characters and antagonists would be rather limited. Generally speaking, I prefer to conquer the world rather than save it :wizard:

Still, I think we value most of the same elements in story-type games and think your views on these characters are insightful

I wrote a piece examining Radovid and Philippa Eilhart in their rivalry in The Witcher 2, and I believe both qualify as magnificent bastards, so I'll just post it here: Radovid V the Stern vs Philippa Eilhart
