That article has taken most of the scene out of context and butchered it to generate rage and clicks. Yes he gives her a magic potion, unknowingly, but to claim that this mini plot has anything to do with gay conversation is hilariously sad.

It's the general problem with the Japanese's tendency to ridicule homosexuality as a 'Butt' to a point where it just seems mean spirited, like Yosuke in Persona 4 whom I sometimes wanted to punch in the throat with his obnoxious jabs.

That's the way of the gaming media nowadays. It's just taking advantage of an already controversial game.

The writing for it is still hilariously bad as it paints her sexuality and attraction to cute girls as a joke/for a laugh. It's kinda obnoxious, and juvenile, though I suppose I should have expected as much from Japanese developers. I suppose it's more or less still a surprise that it is in the game at all.
I don't think its really targeting her sexuality, the trope of a girl/guy unable to speak to the people they're interested in is present in a lot of their media. As an example Working did it with androphobia. What they did here was combine that archetype with the collect all the cute girls character type.
Can it come off wrong, I guess, but imo it's just another case of japanses culture having fun with peoples attractions and responses, which they are much more open about. See Niche Gamer's translation where devs talk about it.
Edit I'm an idiot and linked to an article that I mis-remembered and covered a separate difference in cultures you see brought out in games

I agree that it doesn't seem to be targeting her. Though I agree with Chris that it is still rather awkwardly written. Especially the S support. Though that could be blamed on the translation.

I read that support a while ago after I saw some images joking about Soleil.
I think I thought to myself, 'Ha. That's kind of weird.' And then moved on.
I still don't get the problem.
If its the drink spiking thing... that sounds like the old "games can make you do things" mentality talking again. Nuff said. No one sane thinks that's a good idea.
And if its the implications about her sexuality, that's something you have to read into. A lot. By which point you'd be imprinting.
Honestly though, a support which needs to be able to end with Kamui catching the eye of a woman seemingly only with eyes for other women? I can think of many ways that could have been written (and again interpreted) a lot worse, considering the direction they chose.

The problem I see is that the subject lacks any internal criticism in order to put perspective on it like say Dorian's subplot in Inquisition, whereas here it feels like the ridicule is being reinforced like it's less laughing with it and more laughing at it. Heterosexual characters aren't targets at the same manner or level as that of homosexuality which are st best still treated in accordance with dumb stereotypes. But yeah -- Didn't really expect much from IS.I don't think its really targeting her sexuality, the trope of a girl/guy unable to speak to the people they're interested in is present in a lot of their media. Both the spiking and the gay conversion undertones sound like legitimate gripes and legitimately awful to me.
But the game has plenty of awful **** in it already.

In regards to the supports. There were some I genuinely liked in Awakening alot, like everything with Henry & Gaius -- The latter has some of the strongest dialogue as a parent to Cynthia in the Dark Future DLC - I suppose that says a lot about Fire Emblem when some DLC manages to best the actual main game in terms of story & dialogue, heh.
Most of the Future Past dialogue was better, but there was a lot less of it to write. It also felt a lot more tailored to the characters for that reason. Instead of hearing the same thing over again for everybody. But the general support, the permanent kind, were pretty terrible. Enjoyable to read, but terrible all the same.

I'm not mad about Soleil's support, I'm just sad that we couldn't have her as a lesbian option. She looks like the kinda girl that would be very popular with other girls. Kinda remind me of Ruby Rose.
Other than that, Japan doesn't have the same sensitivity as America. Gay marriage is still illegal and many people are weirded out by gay acts. I'm sure the localization will change that.

The real problem is the question this brings up for all of us.
Would you spike Arthur"s drink to make him gay and then bang him?
This takes us to a very dark place here.
That only the localization can fix.

Well, if you've been to Japan, things like this need to be underwrapped, it's a big taboo more than incest from my experience there. I don't know. I'm not saying it's not weird here in the states, but the level is just different.

I'd much rather see what the media makes of that one...
Though I still can't believe anyone's taking a support where a character straight up says she's only interested in a dude because she's seen him as a women seriously.
The scenario itself is blatantly dumb and yet we're applying social commentary to it as if its even worth considering?
Wut.

Nah, America just has a much louder Vocal Minority than Japan does. For obvious reasons. If Japan's Vocal Minority had political pool, you'd see similar things over there.

Which brings up how awful Nah's parents supports are, of course. That ending. "Why did you fall in love with mom?" "Well, you know she's always looked like a small child..."

Might give that a look once I actually get around to Sacred Stones. I've had that since the 3DS ambassador program...
