Back in the day - a really long time ago - I registered with the BioWare forums with an old email account. That account is now long gone and I've returned, but I cannot "recover" my old display name.

Is there any way to get around this?

Thanks.

Why can't you recover it?

The display name ("Downtym") was registered with an email account that no longer exists. It was my college account which was deactivated when I graduated. And I forgot the password. So when I go to "Recover Display Name" then it tries to email my old email account. Which goes into the great internet blackhole in the beyond.

This might be all for naught given that I heard if you play the XBox version then your Display Name must equal your Gamer Tag. Is that true?

This is why you should always use the same password for everything you do on the Internet.

Well, boo.

All I know is that you're supposedly unable to un- or redo an EA account association.

Indubitably. This is sound advice!

This approach could leave you open to trouble if that password ever falls into the hands of an unscrupulous person.

It's much better to use a different, hard-to-break password for every site you visit, and keep careful records of what password you use for each. There are software programs available that automate this process. Being primarily a Mac user I've found 1Password to be indispensable. I don't know of any Windows alternatives, but I'm sure they're out there.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but I felt it was worth saying. ^_^

Downtym42, I don't suppose you have any old disk backups hanging around from your college days? If so, a bit of patient digging might turn up that old password for you. Barring that, I think your only option would be to email Bioware and see if they'd be willing to help you; though I rather doubt that would be the case.

I'd love to have my earliest BG1 forum name from Black Isles, back about 1998 (?), then, I was just "Gorath", not New-Gorath, or Old-Gorath, or Gorath-1, or Gorath Alpha . .

I hear you, Gorath. I used to be just Midville, but I deleted that account and wasn't able to get it back.

It seems even frustration over account issues can lead to the Dark Side. ;)
