They aren't asking for money yet that I can see. Numenera is already funded and then some. I take it they will eventually do an additional Kickstarter to fund further development beyond that project's goals, but it sounds to me like he's testing the waters and hence not ahead of himself.SOLID_EVEREST wrote...
I agree with that. Fargo is getting ahead of himself. He should wait to see what everyone thinks of Wasteland: 2 before making such announcements. I'm kind of interested, though. I hate not seeing Chris Avellone on the project.

Exactly. One game doesn't play out a trememdous setting like that. There's so much untapped potential in the Planescape. (among many other d&d settings)Jozape wrote...

I'm glad to hear they chose an entirely new setting for Planescape's spiritual sequel. There'd be little to no way of reigniting the same wonder and bewilderment of stepping into Sigil a second time.
True, but Planescape: Torment explores only a small part of Sigil and the planes. There is still plenty of very unusual things to see if any developer ever gets the chance to make another Planescape game.

This is a spiritual successor like origins was to baldurs gate, not a sequel. Just keep avellone away from it and I'm good.
I tend to agree with you. PS:T was both great and overrated. the world setting is good and refreshing but Avellone's dialog wrriting was a bit too wordy for my taste.
Oh it isn't that, it's just that avellone tends to incorporate certain aspects into his writing that I find distateful. I realize that's a vague response but I'd rather not reactivate that particular argument for the sixth time.
@Roflbox yeah, I don't tend to be down with the group mind thing, bro.

"The wheels for the Torment game have been in motion for quite some time." That doesn't sound like he is testing the waters. I'm not saying that Wasteland: 2 will be an automatic failure, but he definitely should've waited till the game released before taking on a new project.

That is some great concept art, It has a feeling reminiscent of Baator and Outlands. Dark and Gloomy, just how I like it.

Well, making a successor to the best game ever is no easy task. The story, dialogue and discovering/unlocking the forgotten past experiences... and the very personal and intimate bonds with unique and memorable companions whose history and fate is intertwined with yours... has no competition... like at all. No other game ever came close to this level.
I even loved the combat, which many criticize. And the heavily modified DnD rules. Sure it was no Fallout and it was cheezy as hell, but I found it fitted the game very well. You really felt the accomplishment when you fired that Mechanus' Cannon or summoned Celestial Hosts... Or when your and Dakkon's lessons and suffering started to bear fruit and his humble Missile of Patience turned into a freaking machine gun ballista (aimed).
I hope Fargo can deliver with a spiritual suceesor to this incredible game, but wouldn't bet on it.

I think you underestimate Fargo. He's really one of the founders of gaming. His Interplay was created during the C64 era, the first era where games evolved from simple imitators of arcade games to meaningful experiences.
He created The Bard's Tale, which became a staple model for RPG's deep into the NES era. It's influences could be seen in Might & Magic, the Eye of the Beholder series, and many others.
Wasteland would become the model for Fallout in later years, which redefined RPG's in many ways. He cultivated Black Isle's creativity and gave Bioware the chance they needed.
His studio released many games regarded as legendary in some way or another, and many more games regarded as legendary included components his studio pioneered. A good example is interactive NPC's with personalities, first seen in Wasteland, and again in Fallout, the early building blocks upon which Bioware itself built it's fame and fortune.
Of all the people in the Industry, Brian Fargo is amognst the most likely to be able to deliver a quality product if he isn't being hamstrung by a publisher. (Sid Meier and Will Wright being the others unless you want to include the japanese market, in which case we'd add another 2 or 3)
