Part of Torment's appeal wasn't JUST the character interactions but the background/setting
(And for all the critical praise Torment gets, I don't think it was a financial success at all since it didn't even get 1 expansion pack much less a sequel - that's very telling)

^I believe they said that RTwP combat would fit a Torment game better.
Going to be good either way I'm sure.
Pity, since they are trying to target old school players I hoped they would choose TB combat.
Still, RTwP can be good too.

It wasn't. It was a financial failure that later became a cult classic.

Well, they are trying to target PST fans, and PST had RTwP combat.

True. But combat was by far the worst part of Torment.

Strange turn of events for Bard's Tale to help get a new crpg like Torment made. One of the pleasant surprises that allowed this to happen was that Bard’s Tale on Android was a success, allowing some leeway in terms of the budget leading up to the Kickstarter.
Ice cold.“I don’t know, they sold a lot of units.” McComb said, laughing. “We have a different audience. I don’t want to make generalizations about the target metric and age for Dragon Age, but ours is hearkening back to a more philosophical, story-driven thing. All respect to the guys at Bioware, because I mean no disrespect, but I think that people are looking for a really reactive, really involved storyline that they have some control over, rather than just an interactive movie with player-controllable combat.”

Revenge for the time when Black Isle had to pay royalties to BioWare for BG?

That...doesn't make sense...
The royalties would've been paid to Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast if anything...

Blame Brian Fargo, not me. That's where I got that info from. I believe it was one of the Matt Chat videos.

Nothing cold about that. I certainly didn't give them money to make a BioWare RPG. There are, after all, people who want RPG's other than the ones we make-- and if they can make one more reactive and with a more involved storyline than us? Awesome. If it's anything like Planescape: Torment, that's exactly what it'll be. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

Colin clarified that on twitter and Mike Laidlaw was OK with it. Colin meant no disrespect.
As for the poll, you know it's created from backers and not from inXile, right?
So it only means that many people dislike Bioware's romances and LGBT "politically correct" approach. News at eleven. It was never a secret. Bioware receives a lot of hate for their romances outside of BSN with people describing their games as "romance simulators". The same way romances are considered an importand part of the games for Bioware fans. It's just a matter of taste.
Colin's answer had nothing to do with that. It was a statement against the whole "cinematic experience", with minimal story reactivity.

Rothfuss is a big fan of the PS:Ts and Fallouts (1/2) of the world, too, so it's not like he will phone it in.

For someone who proposes intellect; his mannerism is contradictory.
As for this hate... I think this stems from DA2, unless BioWare hate was common even before that. Well, seeing as how some in RPG codex bash BG2, I won't be surprised if there was.

WHAT?! Patrick Rothfuss as a stretch goal?! Damn, that's impressive. He's a very talented and amazing guy and I loved both his novels (go read them NOW). Can't wait for this game to happen!
Which novels would those be? I looked at his wikipedia page, there are more than two.

I wonder if it's possible to have too much coolness in too small a space. Can the world even handle this?

The people who bash BG2 are an extreme minority even on Codex. After all P:E promished to be kind of BG3 and the Codex in general loved it.
The hate is for the Bioware romances in general, even in BG2. But in BG2 was a minor part of the game, so people didn't found it offensive, or even liked it. But as of DA:O and beyond romances have become a major selling point in Bioware games. Some people really can't stand them. Combine that with the depart of the clasic RPG roots that happened around COTOR and the "old school" market kind of dismissed Bioware games.
But it's not only the Codex. Even new audiences like The Witcher or Obsidian fans kind of dislike the whole romance idea in the Bioware games.
It's the think that makes Bioware stands out among other companies. Some people really like them, some others find them silly, disgusting or worse.
