I agree with Gaider's observations of this forum and online communities in general. It's hard to have civil debates with some people here. Ad hominem is used like a commodity when a sensible argument, or counterargument, can't be made. Although I was relieved and thankful to see Allan Shumacher frequent these forums for a while (he provided congenial, sincere, non -PR discussion with the community daily. He also was a true gamer), I was surprised he participated as long as he did before he got fed up.

For me, I've found a pattern which I unconsciously follow: Participate for a few months. Disengage for a few months. It has helped to keep me from becoming jaded.

I'm actually a bit infuriated with the mods at the moment because SOMEONE erased the Unconfirmed Rumors thread. Not locked. ERASED. No warning. No "this is becoming spammy". Nope, just boop, gone. No idea who did it or why.

Bad show.

Man, this forum even tires ME and I'm not even forced to deal with it.
Most of that comes from people who speak in my name ("everyone", "the entire fanbase", "all of us", "the majority", etc) about features that they didn't like and needs to be changed, even when I absolutely don't agree with their point.

Heck, I'm even scared to mention those features specifically.

Can you confirm this rumor? :)

This topic is getting quite non-DA3 related. Might I suggest the OP request a mod to move this to Off-Topic?

I think this shouldn't be limited to the bsn, all internet forums besides maybe, and that's a big bucking maybe with a lot of uncertainty, the brony forums, are pretty much places where crazy people post in hyperbolic language about how the creators of the fandom should bow down and do things there way. It's one giant proverbial middle management cooler talk about "How much better things would be if I was in charge" talk, but with more profanity and offensive language.

Internet forums should be cleaned up, but won't, because the internet is anarchy in motion.

I haven`t been to the ME boards for about a year. Is it really worse there than on this board and the DA2 one?

I have to agree in all honesty. This place, specifically the game boards, ME3 espescially just isn't worth setting foot in anymore. I may only post if I see what looks to be an interesting thread that a friend on my activity feed posts in. I almost never actively look in threads anymore and the overall attitude and behaviour of some folks is the reason, as well as possibly some done to death threads.

Off Topic is still awesome as it always has been though. I hope that little area of BSN never changes.

As far as moderating this place goes, its a lot...I don't want to say worse, but...damn what would a better word be...I guess less enforced.

The problem is, before the BSN existed we had the ooold Bioware forums. Smaller community, more moderators, less people got away with their antics. Doesn't mean the old boards didn't have their bad apples, just that those apples had an arrow fly through them earlier and more often than not.

Now? Bigger community, less moderators. Colossal problem.

It gets worse- there's no easy way to get new moderators. You can't just select some random members of the forum and make them mods, that won't work. Hell, there's an actual list of people who'll never be made mods(me being one of them). So there's a distinct lack of moderators and no easy way to amplify their numbers.

And even THEN, more moderators doesn't solve the problem that is people like to go online and hide behind an avatar so they can say whatever they please with reckless abandon.

Has Bioware screwed up? Of course. A lot actually, particularly over the last few years. Its sad.

Does that mean everyone has to be as insulting and mean as possible? No, of course not.

But there will always be those people, and yeah, DG has a point.

Honestly, i don't know how to solve the problem. I don't think they do either. So the easy route-

Avoid them.

Yes. Yes it is.

Imagine a place where nothing changes. Where the same threads about how much bioware sucks are posted every day. Imagine a place where hobbsian state of nature has been allowed to come about and all posters hate eachother, working together only in their hate for someone or something else. Imagine a place where having a differeing opinion is considered insulting and mods only go at night. Imagine a place where all positivity, all warmth, all joy or love, all good feelings for bioware, are visciously sought out and crushed by mandate of the majority.

That, is the ME forums now.

unholy heck, yes. Ever since ME3 dropped it's been pure h-e-doublehockeysticks.

It's calmed a little over the months, but there's still a TON of bitterness.

I was over there alot when ME3 came out. Discussin that Indoctrination theory (it still makes sense!!!), and the forum was pretty nice then.

Seriously? I was wondering where that had gone.

If you're sure, and want it back, ask Stan about it via PM. We've sometimes gotten threads back before by using the right approach.

I don't disagree with him, and it's sad to see--really, has been sad to see BSN descend into insanity basically in this year alone. i mean, the ME3 romance forums completely closed because people--well, it's just unbelievable.

Also, this really isn't DA related. this would be off-topic material.

So what were people doing on the romance forums?

It was hardly something unbelievable. It's exactly the kind of thing I expect to happen, and exactly the kind of thing moderating could've fixed in about an hour. Or a day, to be generous. Instead they close the entire forum down for over three months.

Indoctrination theory grew out of control and began to say everything since ME1 was indoctrination, at least for a time and with a single school of it.

It's like indoctrination theory became a religion, and that religion split up into various factions, and those factions went to war and than made up, and now they have a group in the bioware group section.

For me, most of those arguments fell apart after the expanded ending came out. Still, the discussion was mostly civil and fun when I was there. Wich would be around page 874 of that thread :)

It was pretty civil, though page 1578 was when that thing I was talking about came out, and most of it with pm.

Anyway, it took it reaching close to 4,000 pages to get it's own offical bioware group made for it, so that's impressive in my eyes.

Yeah, well, creating threads about IT on the forums has been outlawed. IT discussion is now allowed only in groups.

I took BSN seriously until I realized this:

rest assured that the BSN is not the only place we go to see what “our fans” think about something

After that?  BSN is like a frog pond to me.  Green, stinky, and every now and then something cool hops around.

So what were people doing on the romance forums?

Was it homophobia or something>

BioWare is always really good at their ability ro be colorblind and sexuality blind - i imagine that is provocative to conservative people.

It was mainly hetrophobia. Seriously I saw it.

Lol, you can't be phobic of hetrosexuals, they gave birth to you! But I won't derail the thread.

I imagine it was about sexuality though, hot topic - shouldn't be, but people make it one.

Well, no matter how much I disliked (didnt hate) DA2, I still have pretty good hopes for DA3. Its going to be very interesting to see how the new engine works out as well.
