He was clearly responding to someone's message. His blog post opens with the message and that's his answer. He very likely thought his answer would be informative to more than just the person who asked the question.

I bring it up because the "gaming journalist" jumped on it pretty fast, and made a few articles on it

I expect to see more unfortunetly

I just googled it.

I don't know what DA forums were like right after DA2, but at lest last year at PAX the devs gave the sense that they heard. Specific points were heard. Like player agnecy. And reused maps and all that.

To be completely honest I think BioWare proved it was listening to fan input the moment I beat Legacy. Combat was fun, the entire cast was back, there were tactics, the wave mechanic was perfected, the darkspawn got their teeth back (well the new units), I mean it was a really solid DLC and a firm step forward to what will eventually be DA3.

So I've been convinced that BioWare listens. I know we still get threads like "Are They Really Listening" all the time. But I think their DLC shows it. I think their panels show it, and I'm hopeful DA3 will show it.

I completely agree.

Pretty much everything that was said in the blog is why I don't even bother reading the ME3 general forums now. It was and IS a toxic place as far as I'm concerned, and reading all the crap in the place was actually making me angry and irritable. I ended up feeling as if avoidance was the best course of action.

I used to be one of the more civil people in the ME3 forums, but I've had quite enough of it all after nine-odd months of petulant whining and melodrama. The only times I ever pop in to that area now is if there's a DLC announcement or for multiplayer updates. Actually, I even avoided the DA3 forums for a long while because the whole DA2 thing was almost as unpleasant - meh.

"only times I ever pop in... dlc announcement... multiplayer updates"
According to your post history you were in the me3 forums discussing edi having a body 24 hours ago... this is hardly the almost never you described.

what may be percieved as dishonesty would probably be accidental, but you should take more care in the future because it affects credibility especially when you make your own personal character an issue

I wonder if Bioware will change their tune about their orphan social network if other game companies begin taking digs at them? I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone takes a swing, just like some developers did post-ME3 Endings Debacle.

I feel like Gaider's tumblr is a place where he can talk about his work and himself in a more personal level, while not having to deal with the BSn being... well, the BSN. I'd hate to see him stop just because some sites have nothing better to write about.

Just going to say that this can be a ridiculous place. Seriously. Considering that I dealt with people for three whole months going on about how they believed that Mac and CHud intentionally killed the universe because EDGY! and because they didn't want to do this anymore... which to my brain is kind of insane... I admit it can be hard to want to read that kind of criticism on a day-to-day basis.

But seriously, David and company should know how well they're treated when they come on here! I remember Allan Schumacher came on to a discussion thread or two back in the middle of it all and we were almost all well behaved. (Chris Priestly is an exception to the rule, admittedly, but hey, the man is billed as "'Evil' Chris Priestly" in end credits of games, I think he's embracing a reputation or something :P.) Jessica was fairly well treated here, too... but the problem with all that was very simply, we thought they gave us a Downer Ending and no one bothered to come on here and say otherwise.

With DA3, there's another problem: DA2 wasn't even a critical darling. Admittedly, I love what they tried to do with the story, and I loved the characters, but the gameplay was not anything to be proud of, and it was well known to be that. So I can admit to having some trepidation about the next game, but ... I swear I can behave.

Buried in the back of my closet I literally have one or two copies of EVERY single game Bioware ever made, right up until DA2. Even the sequels to Bioware games made by “other” developers. Practically everything Bioware ever touched made it’s way into my gaming and literature collection. One simply cannot consume that much of media without a bit of it getting into your heart as well, I was emotionally invested in a for profit organization, as human being are foolishly wont to do.

The truth is that I never visited the Bioware forums until I had an axe to grind, when the feed was good I was happy to sit at the trough and enjoy my repast in isolation, I had my games, my mods, and my books, a valuable reprieve from the 9-5 grind that is most of our lot in life. It was only when the food turned to bile of the most noxious sort that I lifted my gaze and frantically trawled the interwebs in search of some explanation, some reason why, some faint redemption on the horizon, and all I at found at Bioware was the constant, stifling, condensation, and censorship “end of line”

So I submit to you Mr Gaider, that your forums are merely a reflection of your(Bioware’s) games. Until the day I die I will probably count ME3(and to a lesser extent DA2) amongst my greatest disappointments in media. I certainly cannot imagine that a greater failure to live up to potential will ever exist in this era.

Wow.

I don`t. I still remember Ultima 8 and 9. And Might and Magic 9 :) I was disapointed in DA2, sure. But its nowhere close to my biggest disapointment. Not by a long shot.

Now imagine having your feelings hurt every day in the same way, and you might see why he doesn't really like to post here.

I barely go onto these forums because every second topic in the ME3 forum is like being in Groundhog Day. There are the same people writing the same pompous overblown essays about that one thing in ME3 that they can't stand, even when the rest of the world has long moved on. I can't imagine what it must feel like being a Bioware employee who in all likelihood has little to do with the particular gripe on hand but who will, nonetheless, get abused for it.

Not gonna work here. Too many people would vote out of malice. The entire MLP Thread over in Offtopic would be filled with hidden posts because outsiders who aren't fans would want to troll and hide everything.

Just an example of how that system could be broken.

Maybe, but on the other hand, this would provide mods with more data to work with. If they see someone that has been doing a lot of downvoting in a short period time, they now have hard data to invistigate people on, and weed out trolls.

A downvote system would probably also include the ablity to upvote posts you like, similar to how Youtube handles comments.   It probably wouldn't be a perfect system, but it may help with groups of people trying to "downvote bomb" someone.

I really liked the article up to the the very last line

"The only other option is to simply avoid all online interaction with
fans at all or make any such completely benign and PR-oriented"

Unfortunately that is what almost every company does now. Twitter and Facebook isnt really interaction at all, the forums are and they have been neutered.

Back in the good ole days devs would post without PR's permissions, would ask for opinions on content, and would even take things from the boards and put them in the games themselves.

Almost every game i remember back in the day had multiple dev chats and Q&A sessions with real information.

Perhaps the forums are not toxic because there are haters and extreme non haters. Perhaps people just get tired of talking to the the abyss and they go away and all you are left with is the people who dont mind arguing with others instead of interacting with development teams?

I dunno. i picture trolls and whatsnot teaming up and downvoting people that don`t agree with them, or fanboys downvoting people who actually make fair points and end up being labled a hater because of it.

GOG forums use this feature. Its a pretty helpful system, as it makes it easy to dispense with spammers or trolls & to upvote decent posts, but its not without it's abuses. There's actually a pretty lengthy discussion over the feature going on there at the moment.

Maybe they should just make a separate "V.I.P" board for people who do behave? They could interact with fans there, and just keep anouncements and stuff on the regular boards?

I really don't get why people are so given to insulting and castigating Bioware developers on here

If you want to do that why not sign up to the RPG codex or somesuch to find other like minded individuals

I wouldn't come into someone's establishment and verbally abuse them regardless of my subjective opinion of their product, it's in bad taste

True, but I do think there needs to be a way for community members to help police the forums that doesn't involve PMing a moderator.

Bioware would have to hire Santa to figure out which posters are naughty and which ones are nice.
