about Dragon Age 2 canon than I do. This is something that has been bugging me though, and I would love to
hear come comments on my little crackpot theory.
Here is the information that has me wondering about Malcolm being the unnamed leader of the Band of Three:
From the Dragon Age 2 Wiki:
"During the optional Legacy quest Malcolm's Will,
when listening to the ghostly voice of Malcolm, it is revealed that he
was a Circle Mage (though he does not specify where) at some point,
stating that 'I may have left the Circle, but I took a vow. My magic
will serve that which is best in me; not that which is most base.'"
From the final Codex entry for the Enigma of Kirkwall:
"What answers does Kirkwall hold? Why look here instead of Perivantium or
Vol Dorma? The Imperium does not give up its secrets easily. Even with
the magisters centuries dead, our journey is perilous. Here on the dock of the Gallows, we renew our vows. And should we fail, search for the markings of the Band of Three."
Based on this *highly* circumstantial evidence, I find myself wondering if the vow that all 3 of them are taking is
the same vow that you hear Malcolm uttering during Legacy. Which would make sense, because the one thing
that is generally agreed about the Band of Three is that they were apostate mages who either escaped the
Circle or were somehow set free, which would be possible through the help of Malcolm's Templar friend Maurevar.
I am not sure how this jives (or does not jive) with Malcolm's known history, and more importantly with the general
timeline of events. I "surmise" (read: pull from my anus) that Malcolm's hope that his children would not be mages
came about because of his harrowing experiences beneath Kirkwall and the discovery of The Forgotten One, and
it is why he moved so far away from Kirkwall to a backwater Fereldan town like Lothering.
But yeah. I have no idea. All I know for sure is that I want a written, dated record of this hypothesis so that I can
brag about it if I'm right.
am a huge fan. It seems more likely that the whole Band of Three thing was just a sideshow and (as many have
pointed out) a retroactive apology for the insane amounts of demons and blood magic in Kirkwall.
I do hope I'm right, though. If the first scene of Dragon Age 3 is an oath at the Gallows between Fiona the Mage Warden, Malcolm Hawke, and (some mage with a name starting with V), I will give myself a huge pat on the back.
I eagerly welcome evidence that contradicts my theory, but please don't bother pointing out how little evidence
I have to support my own theory. I am the first to agree that this is a rather unlikely, unsupported theory.
