I am not a huge fan of "sword and sorcery" - I never finished Oblivion or Dragon Age; Origins, I think partly because the setting just left me cold (though I do intend to return to DA:O some day). However, I've heard good things about The Witcher on numerous occasions and noticed that they were selling the Enhanced Edition for $2.50 on Steam, so I decided to give it a shot.

So far, I'm actually liking it - while Geralt seems to be a "Renegade" by default in some situations (particularly in the opening sequence where he's using a criminal as bait for a monster), I still seem to have enough leeway to shape his responses that it hasn't gotten to the point of, "That's it, I'm tired of playing this jerk," especially since he's lost his memory and so has something of a clean slate. The first bit with the attack on the Witchers managed to draw me in right away, and the process of unraveling what was happening in the Vizima outskirts was interesting. I've just gotten to the point where Geralt gets ambushed and thrown in jail upon entering the city. And I have had to make at least a couple of tough choices so far where the game doesn't necessarily tip you off as to the consequences.

However, I have two gripes and I'm wondering if I should expect these things to continue throughout the game:

1) Are there any young female characters who *aren't* going to end up offering to sleep with Geralt if I'm nice to them or as some sort of transaction for a favor? In just a few hours' gameplay in the Vizima outskirts, Geralt was either implicitly or explicitly propositioned by Abigail, a waitress from the inn (Vesna, I think), and some random woman collecting tulips, and I have no idea if there might have been even more of this if I'd actually spoken to every single NPC. Personally, I find this goofy at best and horrendously sexist at worst - unless it's meant to be self-parody, but I don't get that sense from any other aspect of the game.

2) In order to get people in the outskirts to talk to Geralt, I had to go through an awful lot of "go kill X number of monsters"-type quests that were rather tedious at times, especially since the game's combat system leaves me feeling more like a choreographer than an actual participant. I think the worst was when Abigail offered to brew a potion, but told me I needed to go pick five plants and bring them back - sure, they weren't far, but does anyone at all actually enjoy doing things like that in a game? I mean, what's the point?

I suppose I'll still try to finish it even if I am going to have to put up with these things, but I'm just wondering what I'm in for....

Yeah, those aspects are there. But I for one found the dialogue with the women more intricate than most games, and the directness and goofyness of these... er... encounters really well-done and original. It fits the medieval setting and the characters. If it were more done in other games, I'd probably not like it as such.

As to the fetch-quests, they never really felt like ones to me. The thing is, the mechanics, the art/scenery, music and overall is really really intricate most of the times, so it's the only game I've thus far found these not a chore at all.

Though these aspects *are* present in the game, you don't really have to do them. You can just stick to main story-lines and not choose "dubious" choices if those are not for you (I know, a unoriginal answer this, but I do hope more people get to enjoy the pacing, rhythm and engaging (yet slow) mechanics of the game).

Edit: Oh and another thing. Do check out mods for The Witcher. Flash mod is a must-have with the "walk-button" (for maximum immersional enjoyment in cities), and well, basically all offered by the this modding team is real good. + there's loads more. I personally only use some aspects of Flash mod (really like the walking, and some rebalances), story mods, and sometimes the scabbards. I don't really like the "cheating" ones though. They break from the purpose of the game.

About the fetch quests, just loot everything while you are walking around doing other missions. It´s usually more than enough to reach the parts needed.

I think there´s a single woman you can´t sleep with. Sometimes it feels ok, most seem like Geralt (or maybe the player?) just wants to sleep with every woman around, and there are also some out of the blue and just plain wrong. I facepalmed at the elf one in Ch 4.
