Race mattered for me in almost everything, because it informed how I thought my character would approach quest situations and respond to NPCs.Sidney wrote...
Race did not matter in 98% of DAO. For most of the game, the overwhelming chunk of it, all race mattered was what character model you had.
"Most people played as humans in DA:O, so from now on the protagonists will be human."

I Have the not the idle and probably mental solution.... >_>... for one game make the Elves the only playable race.... then the next a Dwarf then the Human again. That way the Dwarves will have a nice selection of beards to choose from I think the beard my avatar is using is the only one I like.

Oh, here is where we get into the "right" way of playing an RPG. Creating and shaping an avatar is central to the player experience of this type of game. If it weren't, we wouldn't be talking about character customization at all.Plaintiff wrote...

It's nothing to do with that at all, the simple fact is that your argument (ie, "the game is different because I imagined it to be") entirely misses the point. It's simply not relevant.Addai67 wrote...

The people saying that race doesn't make a significant difference mean that the game, the code, the programming or whatever you want to call it, does not react enough to make the experiences of playing a different Origin distinct from each other. They want their choice of race to be acknowledged by the game, with greater frequency and greater divergence than it has been in games like DA:O and Skyrim. They want the choice of race to have an observable impact. I'm inclined to agree. For example, if Khajiit in Skyrim are banned from living in the cities, and are hated throughout the region, then playing a Khajiit should affect your playthrough in a more visible way. Owning houses should not be an option in most of the cities, for example.
You can argue that your various playthroughs of a game were different because you approached them differently, but that has nothing to do with the issue of observable change, which is what people are asking for.

I already said upthread that NPC references to race in the game are few, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't matter at all. Racial background informs the character's backstory and that gives context to everything in the game.Plaintiff wrote...

It is relevant because player experience is part of what makes a game what it is. And people aren't just asking for very widely diverging player paths, simply for the option of playing the other races as we had in Origins.

There is already a thread open discussing a human protagonist.
