He has the ability to speed up the taint inside a Grey Warden and caused a few to turn into a mid-state between GW and Darkspawn, which is what all GW turn into if they don't die. That's partially why they all go into the Deep Roads to die.
His main goal, at least what he claims, is that he wants to kill the Old Gods. He has the knowledge of where they are and might be able to do it, or cause a new Blight. I have suspected he caused the last one, or tried to prevent it and failed. He wants to turn all life into that midstate into quasi-darkspawn, and exterminate his own mindless brethren.
So he's pretty much a very dangerous individual, but he doesn't know much about how the top part of the world works.
Edit: Even if you aren't planning to read the books, I still recomend to check them out. If not for the great background material, they're short and very good reads. I really enjoyed them myself.

Basically he's a freak. He's a hyperintelligent, well-spoken - even a bit charasmatic- darkspawn. He can't control his brethren so for the most part he works alone. Last we saw him he has a Ghoul-like partner who is a corrupted GW silent sister named Utha.

Don't forget the part where he wants to expose the taint to all of humanity, so that even if 10% of the population survives they won't go to war with the Darkspawn (who won't have any old gods to guide them)

He had a two-pronged plan. First he captured Bregan, the former Warden Commander of Orlais, who'd come to the Deep Roads for his Calling. Bregan knew the locations of the remaining Old Gods, and the Architect's plan was to use that information to track down the Old Gods and destroy them before they could be corrupted into Archdemons, since the Old Gods have a "song" that all darkspawn and Grey Wardens with advanced taint can hear in their heads, and it's what compels the darkspawn to dig and make Archdemons (there's a hint of this in the game that you can learn by talking to Ruck). The Architect believed that with the Old Gods gone, the darkspawn would be able to move beyond their barbaric ways and become sentient like him.
The second part of the plan was basically to infect everyone on the surface with the taint, effectively making EVERYONE a Grey Warden. Thus, with the corruption being universal, to both darkspawn and surface races, there'd be no need to fight. To this end, he contacted First Enchanter Remille, who had been assigned to Ferelden's Circle from Orlais. In exchange for teaching Remille special darkspawn magics and delivering Loghain to him (the Grey Wardens had originally intended to ask for Loghain's help, but Maric snuck off to journey with them instead), Remille would help the Architect lure the Grey Wardens that would follow Bregan into the Architect's clutches. He gave Remille special obsidian brooches that accelerated the spread of the taint, and allowed the Architect to sense the people wearing them. He also gave Remille a dagger that protected from the taint and dispelled darkspawn magic. Duncan stole this dagger, which protected him from the effects of the brooch.
He convinced Bregan to join his cause, and later captured Maric, Duncan and several other Grey Wardens. They had been searching for Bregan the Deep Roads under the command of Bregan's sister, Genevieve, the current Warden Commander of Orlais. The Architect and Bregan convinced Genevieve and Utha, one of their other companions, to join them as well. Duncan, Maric and Fiona (an elf mage who'd joined the Wardens) escaped back to the surface, where they were captured by Remille.
Remille, needless to say, was pleased that he got the King of Ferelden as opposed to just the Hero of River Dane. However, he turned on the Architect, attacking him. Genevieve, Bregan and Utha who joined them tried to stop Remille but only Bregan survived, while Remille was slain by Duncan.
The Architect escaped, and Bregan asked for Maric to kill him, since he was practically a darkspawn now with the acceleration of the corruption. Maric obliged.
So, in short, the Architect seems to want to end the cycle of Blights and raise the darkspawn into a true civilization. How Remille's betrayal has altered his perceptions of surface peoples hasn't been shown, but I suspect he'll be less willing to trust people this time around. Furthermore, it's unclear yet as to what his association with The Children is or who his mysterious prophet friend is.
