What difficulty would those of you who have played the game a fair bit recommend for a first playthrough? I was tossing it up between normal and hard... I'll be played as a Human Warrior or City Elf Warrior... (Any recommendations on which is cooler would be welcome too
).

I am presently playing on normal and the game seems to be getting easier as I go. It is strange, but the first couple hours were the hardest for me. Perhaps it is because I am getting better and am using tactics more wisely, but now things are relatively simple.
Anyway, if you are competent at these sorts of games you can probably handle hard. On my next playthrough I will bump it up to hard, but I just want to enjoy the story on this run.
I cannot compare those two origins, since I have only played a human noble warrior so far, but I thought it was cool. A bit obvious, perhaps, but there is some nice foreshadowing.

I can recommend Hard as being perfect for those whose enjoyment from combat comes from tactics, but not ridiculous amounts micromanagement.

I started the game on hard with a Dwarf Commoner Rogue. Kept getting my ass handed to me to I started again on normal with a Human Noble Warrior. Much easier. You have to micromanage and use tatics way more on hard is the biggest difference. Also, you either get less potions on hard, or you barely get any potions in the Dwarf Commoner origin.

Seems like hard is harder (surprise!
) but is more enjoyable? I might do normal first and see how it goes...
So no City Elf Warriors?

All the l33t elves are Dalish, of course.

The City Elf origin story sounds so much more interesting though...

Yeah I too am interested to know from someone who have goten quite a bit on normal or hard, and tell us how their general experience is.
My own memories of games like Baldurs Gate warns me that the games tends to become -sufficently hard- on their own by just using the standard rules.

Yea, I'd read that the game was easier on 360, so I tried hard on my 1st playthrough with a rogue. I kept getting owned by Baraht the crime lord. So I started over with a warrior. I can't tell if it's easier because of difficulty, or class and origin or both. You get less followers in the Dwarf Commoner origin. Only 1 and hes a rogue too. And it seems you get less potions too. Either way I'm enjoying the game.

I'm currently playing on normal and either I suck or the game is still kinda hard on normal either way I am having a blast.

Well I'm on normal and I have actually had a difficult time at parts...there are certain times where its almost instant death to my party....on normal...its so frustrating lol

been running through on nightmare, the dragon was definately the most difficult so far. Indoors has involved a lot of "hold ground" at doorways and spell combos to insta kill tough, bigger targets.

I always start my first game on easy to so I can learn the controls.
I'm also notorious for wanting to try out all of the classes before i actually pick something to complete and by then I go to normal. Once I've completed a couple of games I'll move on to hard.

I'm playing on hard and with very limited reloads I've not had a character death/incap, yet.
Since I haven't really 'found' many people.. I'm currently running 2 tanks (PC and Alistair) Morrigan (no heals) and Leliana. Leliana is meh at the moment.. I was using Dog before her and he was a huuuge asset for crowd control.
Most of my chars are level 8ish and I've just finished the (no spoiler) Redcliffe intro.. I only had to reload two times. I don't do near as much pause and play as I thought I would but I've set up my tactics pretty well, too.
Very fun game.. with limited breaks here and there I've clocked around 10 hours in one sitting O.o I need to step away before I turn to dust.

Personally hard is the only way to go for me. I'm playing a primal mage so it makes it tricky as hell to make sure I don't blast my team but it's extra satisfying when i succeed.

I've been playing on hard, just finished human noble origin. Haven't had to switch difficulties so far (haven't had to use any potions or other consumables either). I've had to reload a couple of times, but very doable without any deaths.
Positioning is very crucial. I also found that pulling enemies to your party (instead of rushing the enemy group) usually makes battles easier.

Started nightmare with mage. Easysauce. Actually lost once to overwhelming numbers of darkspawn when I got over confident. Oopsy. Take lots of stunning abilities and game is easier though bosses seem to so far require other tactics.

You need to make sure Leliana (or any archer for that matter) is using their talents effectively or another frontline fighter would be better. Archers are for all there disabling talents.
I play on hard so even the basic monsters are tough and can kill you if you don't plan your battles. Never get flanked and always do the flanking.
My favorite Origins are Danish Elf (I like playing the explorer of lost ruins), Dwarf noble (Awesome political intruge and Dwarf society rocks), and the Mage (felt like alice in wonderland at the start, very cool). Considering I can just use Morrgian as my mage so I can still have fun with spells and Dwarfs are too **** ugly for my taste, I choose Danish Elf. I'm a warrior but I also Duel Wield, Duel striking does so much damage and since I'm not a rogue I don't have to worry about the lost of backstab.
Funny, I was set on being a human noble two handed champion. Oh well, at least my Danish Elf warrior can still be a champion.
