If there was any sort of Arcane Archer class specialization, I'd probably go with that. So Mage, finally.

I never understood why Apostates didn't use Bows. They could use spells to empower their arrows in case they needed to defend themselves. Much mre subtle and discreet then a staff.

Hmm, that is a thought. They'd have to dress differently though. Mage robes don't exactly make for good archery gear.

Yeah. apostates aren't the most skilled in blending in.

That's been established in other threads.

hahaha

But bows would help.

Mages can't swag with a Bow. They need their Staffs.

I think the Arcane Archer would be a good class for a squadmate to have. You know, if he/she was an apostate.

So what kind of new abilities would you guys want to see for Archery?

Anything that can AoE without being ridiculous like Rain of Arrows, hahaha. I'd still use it if it was there though.

Personally, I think archery should be more focused on single target DPS. So any new abilities should be focused either on that, or on helping an archer character keep their distance from their enemies.

Well, any time an enemy got close to me in DA2 I found a way to back up.

Which usually meant a backflip. ugh

Too much trouble, wind speed and direction would be.

Speaking of things affecting the use of bows...

1) I'm not sure if DAO had this, but I'd like to see being at an elevated platform affecting how much damage you do with ranged weapons. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn -- and IIRC, the game before it Path of Radiance -- had it so that if a unit was attacking with a ranged weapon and was higher then their enemy, they'd get a damage/accuracy bonus.

The lower unit would get a massive accuracy drop.

2) I'd like to see actual flying enemies that can only be attacked by ranged weapons, a la FFXII. So say... crossbows, bows, magic, and perhaps even throwing axes/daggers/etc.

I don't know about flying enemies, that might be a bit much especially with the current perspective.

As far as height affecting damage, that is again something I don't think they'd do. If they got that intricate with it, then other weapon types could use intricacies as well. Also, it depends how vertical the game would end up being, as there's no point if 80% of the time we'll be on the same level as our opponents.

How so? They're using a really advanced engine, and older games have managed to accomplish flying enemies. I assume by perspective you mean fighting from the over the shoulder party point of view. If so, FFXII did it, so in theory this shouldn't be a problem for DA3.

Let's say we're defending a castle from a siege and we're moving along the walls. Perhaps there are enemies coming in from the distance and are within range of being attacked.

Then perhaps it'd be good there.

Or let's say a wall was breached, but we're fighting from the top of the wall and they're down below. We could either focus on the enemies in front of us or the ones below fighting our allies. If we do the latter, we get an accuracy and damage bonus.

Those are very specific examples though. There's no point if its only going to be used in a few instances.

Given the context of the game -- a war is being fought -- I think it'd happen more then just a few times. Those examples aren't the only ones that could be the case for such a bonus.

Defending villagers from a hilltop, for instance, as enemies come charging in.

I imagine Bioware will indeed have many hillside areas in the game. Both DAO and DAII had their fair share of inclined areas. So perhaps if there's a "medium" distance between you and the enemy, you get a bonus? And if there's a "large" distance between you and the enemy, you get a greater distance?

DAO had those as tactic setups. If an enemy was at a medium or long range away from you, you could set it up so you performed some sort of function.

If we're gonna be dropping ideas for what Bioware could do with archery in big moments...

One arrow that killed thousands

Actually, thinking about it, it definitely was thousands of people that that one arrow killed(I doubted it in the post following it).

I forgot just how large Stannis' force was at that point.

So yeah. If Bioware could do something like that. Wow.

If you're a lord you should have a portable tower pushed around by slaves that you can fire down from so that you always have the high ground.

The non-Mage lord of Tevinter method of killing people. Most excellent.

I've been watching the TV show Arrow (live action version of DC's Green Arrow comics) and there's a lot of close to medium range shooting. What I like is that Oliver Queen is constantly moving around to get shots in against his opponents instead of just standing there firing arrows.

It would be nice to get the same mobility bonuses that the stabby rogues get. Or maybe a "point blank" ability that when activated increases damage at close range.

Yeah, we talked about being able to shoot arrows while on the move earlier.

Excellent idea I hope they considered already.

In my opinion, any setting without friendly fire is a broken setting.

Rain of Arrows I'm sure would make friendly fire a nightmare.

It didn't in Awakening.    Decent, acceptable tactical gameplay is  all it took to deal with it.  In the first game, I honed my skills to l33t levels and always managed to perfectily time and perfectly space all my AOE attacks so as to not  hurt my   own party members with them.    it wasn't a "nightmare" at all.  it was what made combat fun.

Of course, Bioware has promised us better tactical combat  for the next game than the abomination we  got for DA2, so maybe they will bring back friendly fire.  I wouldn't  bet the house on  such a thing though.

New abilities?  Meh, how about they bring back the *dozen*  from Origins/Awakening   that they shamelessly got rid of for DA2.

Seriously, this thread cracks me  up. We're discussing a weapon style that Bioware practially eliminated in the second game.  If anything, the message we should send Bioware is:  Bring Archery BACK.  Don't relegate it to the fringes like you did in DA2.

Well it didn't feel eliminated to me cause I found it very fun.

Beating the Arishok one on one with my archer Hawke was awesome.
