And I can kinda see something similar being used by a Dwarven Archer.

Looks like something out of Transformers.

That looks like the kind of bow that would end up sending an arrow through your own face.

You mean like this thingie?

I get that its fantasy, and Rain of Arrows isn't exclusive to DA, but I've never understood exactly how thats supposed to work.

Obviously, it depends on if one deigns to give an explanation.

Me, I'd accept how DAO:A did it where Nathaniel would repeatedly fire into the air. Five times, IIRC. I can choose to assume, based on the light beams acting as tracers, that he's firing multiple arrows each time. Maybe even bundles of arrows that break apart in the air to fall down.

May not be completely realistic, but it's not as bad as Varric or Sebastian firing once in the air and it certainly beats having the Archer fire 50 times into the air for a few minutes while they're left open to attack to make it seem realistic. Not that I had a problem with DAII's Hail of Arrows, mind you.

EDIT: For DAII, however, the Archer is launching an entire quiver at once. For Varric, it can be headcanoned that Bianca allows for this because she's a very special crossbow. For Sebastian, however, it's not the same.

Archery in games is weird, sometimes.

Rain of arrows is based on the technique of shooting arrow in several different angles so they'll hit at the same time. It was commonly used by lonbowmen formation, that fired 3 barrages that hit together.
It's great if you have some archers and want to keep the enemy constantly suppressed. For a stealth solo archer it's good because he can he three targets simoltaneusly; good against sentries.

well arrows and bolt were fired to have a suppression effect through history.
usually you have several archers firing at the same times and since the target is usually massive. you can have several arrows in the air at once.

For a single shooter, well deliberate aim trumps every thing so.
Besides due to the nature of bow and crossbow trajectory (where angle varies greatly with the range), the range where you can use the two trajectories is somewhat limited, as precise aiming at high incidence angle is problematic.

personally I used the same justification a TEWR, not trying to think too much on how the hell you knock a full quiver to the single string or the effect of the weight on the initial speed and the external ballistic.

Yeah, once you're using it you stop thinking about it and just use it.

Hell its so effective I actually like it.

I have never been an archer, is it fun? I am thinking of trying it out in my DA II play through. I am hesitating because you don't get much for it and Varric/ Sebastian die easily. I admit Leliana has never been one of my staple characters Because she had a bow.

Nathaniel wasn't bad though. Any advice on a good build?

There's not much complicated about an archer, so just go for it. You'll figure it out.

If you happen to find bowstrings, lettuce no.

As for Varric and Sebastian dying easily, O_o

Not for me they didn't

Really? Sebastian and Varric were always biting the bullet due to low health or other reasons more than Fenris or even Anders and Merrill. I dreaded the Rogue run due to the fact they died very easily.

Then their build you chose for them did not compliment your character's stats. I know the feeling. That's why I take my time building them.

My primary squad consists of Merrill, Isabela, and Aveline.

DA:2 is less kind to sub-optimal build, so yes they will die often. really you have two options either you optimse the companions and play what ever concept you whish (and they will do all the work, unless you concept happens to be a vanguard berserker/reaver)
or optimise your own build and you will be more free with they build. (There is a forrun on char optimisation in the DA:2 forum.)
of course you could optimise every one but that is really an overkill.

as for archey the best way to find out is to try it. like lots of pursuit my guess is that it will depend more upon the club than every thing else.

Archers can be pretty effective. I remember rolling with my archer Hawke, Sebastian, Varric, and then having one outsider like Isabella or Aveline.

BW must hate bowstrings.

This reminds me, they must also hate weapons sheets. Seriously, I consider them personally mandatory!

I've often wondered if the reason they don't ever use bow strings is some kind of limitation of the engine they're using, or perhaps their own inability to get them to work.

It can't possibly be an oversight.

Everyone else has bowstrings. Bioware as far as bowstrings go is stuck in the 1990's.

Like, this far back
