AWW GODDAMN, HOW DID I NOT THINK TO ASK OF THIS-
ARCHERY. FINISHERS.
I hated how my DA2 archer's finishers involved daggers she never really used.
I want some archery finishers for bosses!
Yeah, bow and crossbow finishers should be a thing by now.
I was so bloody disappointed by the lack of them in DA2. Especially cause archery was one of the few things I enjoyed in that game.

Ahh. Well, they're pretty. I think it'd be nice if they made a return. DEM FROSTBITE 2 BOWS.

Could look at Fire Emblem's ways of having archers do criticals. Mostly, they just twirl the arrow before firing. Though the Warriors would actually do some pretty crazy **** with the bow before firing.
That's what I've always advocated for Archers in DA, anyway.

As far as not turning your fingers into hamburger meat, thats why we have a thing called shooting gloves.
Which reminds me, it would be cool if our squadmate archer would wear one on their strong hand.

I've always wanted to take up archery myself, but since I was living in a city that wasn't really feasible. Now that I'm out in the open countryside where deer hunting is a thing I could do -- if I wanted -- I could probably take up archery in my free time and learn.
Provided I A) got a bow anddidn't **** up my fingers.

Then you have skills like Deadeye, where the archer literally throws an arrow into the air, jumps to catch it and then fires it back down on the enemy's head before landing. Fire Emblem certainly doesn't skimp on their finishers.

finishers to look like, I can imagine for example with an ogre boss
after brutally injuring it, shooting arrows into its legs to down it,
then that one cinematic arrow that goes through its skull.
That sounds great and actually believable. Maybe against a high dragon the finsher would be shooting an arrow down it's throat?

Yup, that's what the Warriors in Fire Emblem would do. See here for the Warrior bow critical. The other bow ones are further in, assuming you haven't played FE before LPPrince.

Thanks for the link, man!

I did love the Tellius series' finishers and third-tier talents. Those were epic.

That cutscene would likely involve aiming carefully to shoot one of the dragon's eyes, then the other one, and as its down, getting that final arrow in the throat.
Or, To integrate that Fire Emblem idea, the two arrows in the eyes, then leaping on to the back of the dragon as if riding it, and then leaping off of it to do a midair jump in front of its head followed by a shot through its skull or if almost landing doing an upward shot through the throat.

I have not in fact played Fire Emblem. Thank YOU for the link.
And you're welcome. Archery is one of the safest sports in existence actually, but you have to know what to wear when doing it.
Gloves, armquards, gauntlets, bracers, whatever you want to call something to protect your hand and arm. I'd like in-game archers to show some of that actually.

Perhaps Leonardo's outfit would be a better image.

Good archer wear is stuff that won't get in the way or slow you down, something comfortable as you'll either be in the same place for a long time exhausting your arm or moving quickly to avoid incoming fire.
As far as armwear goes, the arm that holds the bow is where the protection needs to be. The string can slap your arm if you're not careful and you're holding your bow too stiffly. Also, there are some pretty horrific images you can find of what happens when something goes wrong and your own arrow goes through your hand, though that is extremely ridiculously rare and is really only gonna happen if your bow and arrows are very messed up.
Simple gear really for us in the modern age. Gauntlets and such things
Do your archery homework before you get started, the more you know the safer you'll be.

Hard to tell whats on his bowarm, but he IS wearing a glove on the hand holding the bow, which while not necessary DOES help. There's probably some protection for his forearm. And his attire lets him move quick and not get anything in the way of the shot.
Perfect really.
Hence why rogues that shoot arrows in these games typically dress light.

But I meant more along the lines of Shinon's armguards/gloves/whatnot, which you answered in superb detail on what is best.

And your comment made me think of G.I. Joe. Knowing is half the battle, after all!

Archery's complicated. Different kinds of bows require different kinds of stances, there's variations on all of them. You find whats most comfortable and stick with it, and let it become second nature.
I'd be cool if different archers in DA3 had different stances and such, but I imagine that'd be asking for too much, so I'm fine with the same ol animation for everybody with a bow.

I doubt they do that, really. It'd certainly be nice, but something tells me they don't.
Regarding archery for a beginner, are there any types of bows you'd recommend for... well... beginners? Or does it not really matter which bow is used?

Well, depends. Instinctive shooting is hard- you don't have sights on your bow, you're looking at your target, guessing the distance, etc etc. I tried that at first, and its difficult. I'm still not quite good at it, as it takes a LOT of practice.
But if you want all the modern day technical hoohahs and such things, a Compound Bow would work.
Though honestly, I'd suggest purchasing a cheap bow first, just to get a feel and to practice a little bit initially. Compound Bows are expensive(the one I just bought being $464), but even so you can find Compound Bows for cheaper prices than that. Thing is, they require more maintenance, so really it never gets easy. One way or another, something gets complicated.
As I said, do your homework and experiment. Find someone locally who can teach you, or like me, teach yourself. Practice makes perfect.

Actually kinda makes me want to go and find something to read regarding the Hundred Years' War.
Thanks for the tips man. I'll probably start saving up some cash for a bow. It'll be nice to take it up. I think my forefathers on both sides were great bowmen themselves, and it'd be a nice way to get in touch with my heritage.

Believe me, once you start shooting and getting the hang of it, you'll look at archery completely differently in games because you'll know what they're doing and going through, especially to be that good.
While I wasn't a big fan of DA2, I'll say this-
Alexandria Hawke was one hell of an archer.

It'd be cool if we could get a rescue scene like that for archers in DA:I.
Just started a new DA:O playthrough as an archery rogue now it's quite refreshing compared to the warrior smash spam.
